Another week, another award for the 2008 Corvette. Last week it was Corvette Convertible that won Strategic Visions Total Quality Award for “Convertibles over $30,000“. This week, it’s the Coupes turn as visitors to Edmunds.com made the 2008 Corvette the Consumer’s Top Rated “Coupe over $45,000″. The Edmunds.com Consumer’ Top Rated award is the result of thousands of people’s opinions about their cars so this award says much about the owners of Corvettes and their expressed level of satisfaction about their car. Read on to see what Edmunds.com says about the 2008 Corvette.
In selecting the winner of each class, the editors of Edmunds.com gives each winner a write-up faithfully describing the ownership experience. Here is what they said about the 2008 Corvette Coupe:
Most exotics are hobbled by two significant flaws. The first is an exorbitant price tag. The second is a proclivity for being temperamental; these traits make many of these cars poor choices for those in search of a daily driver. Enter the Chevrolet Corvette. In addition to being a slice of pure Americana, this coupe offers world-class performance at a price that’s thousands more affordable than others in its class. It also boasts the sort of rock-solid dependability that makes it an excellent choice for everyday driving. Consumers have expressed appreciation for the Corvette’s impressive interior comfort and its head-up display. The car’s distinctive styling also earns it a special place in many hearts. Then, of course, there’s the prodigious power offered by its 6.2-liter and 7.0-liter V8s. Gushed one consumer: “Acceleration is instantaneous and onlookers are plentiful.” Yep — that about sums up the Corvette’s one-of-a-kind allure.
Becky Anderson is a typical mother of three, but after meeting Patrick Gramm of Digital Corvettes and Vette Dogs fame, she trades in the minivan for Patrick’s 2002 Z06 Corvette race car. “Becky has no qualifications whatsoever to be a Corvette race car driver, except for her enthusiasim and desire to go really fast.” This is the set up for the first episode of Vette Girl, a new weekly video series that chronicles Becky’s pursuit of speed. According to some of the comments from Patrick, the show has grand aspirations for 40 episodes this year.
Here’s the first episode which has Becky taking the broken Z06 to the shop and acutally gets a lesson on performing some of the mechanical upgrades herself:

The Corvette Racing team has been deployed to France for the 24 Hours of LeMans and Sunday’s Test Day was their first and only day for testing on the LeMans course prior to the start of official practice and qualifying sessions beginning June 11th. During the day-long session which featured occasional downpours, showers and red-flags, the team had the opportunity to test a range of Michelin tires as well as evaluating chassis and gearbox setups.
“Mad” Max Papis recorded the fastest time for the Corvette Racing team with a lap around the 8.481-mile circuit in the #64 C6.R at 3:55.520. Johnny O’Connell was right behind him in the #63 Corvette at 3:55.877. Those times were the third and fourth fastest in the LeMans GT1 class following the #009 Aston Martin DBR9 (3:53.531) and the #50 Saleen S7R (3:55.383).
“I think we maximized the opportunities that we had today,” said Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. “It certainly wasn’t the test plan we had laid out, but the conditions were the same for everybody. When it’s all said and done, it may actually be to our advantage when a day like this happens because we’re well prepared when we arrive, and more practice time tends to narrow the gap. “The drivers are very satisfied with the development work we’ve done,” Fehan continued. “When we briefly had a dry track this morning, the cars were very stable. I think this is probably the best start we’ve had at Le Mans from the standpoint of having cars that are really good out of the box, and everyone is very encouraged by that.”The Corvette Racing team will be facing stiff competition at this year’s 24 Hours of LeMans. Here are the 10 entries for the LMGT1 Class:

The track opens again on Wednesday, June 11th for 2 days of qualifying and practice sessions. The 24 Hours of LeMans gets underway at 3pm local time on Saturday, June 14th. SPEED TV will be carrying much of the race live.
On Saturday I took a drive across Tampa to my Corvette Club’s sponsoring dealer Ferman Chevrolet to see the two special edition 2008 Corvettes: The 30th Anniversary Indy 500 Pace Car replica and the 427 Edition Corvette Z06. While the promotional pictures and other people’s photos have already appeared online, it’s quite a different thrill to actually see these two unique Corvettes up-close and personal.
Ferman’s Corvette specialist Tommy Farruggio told me they ordered two of the Indy 500 Pace Car replicas, a convertible and a coupe. I’ve mentioned it before and seeing it in person has only reinforced my belief that this is the best looking Corvette Pace Car since the original one appeared back in 1978. What really stands out is the green trim on the Indy 500 side logos and the stripe running along side the hood bulge. The Pace Car replica’s feature the signature of Emerson Fittipaldi, two time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and are numbered. The Pace Car coupe that I viewed was number 245 out of 500. This Corvette has already been sold but interestingly the buyer is also in the market for a sub-1000 mile 1978 Corvette Pace Car. If you know of one available, let me know.
The other special edition of 2008 is the Crystal Red 427 Corvette Z06, a tribute car that celebrates the heritage of the 427 cubic inch engine. In Chevrolet history, the 427 engine was the pinnacle of performance for Corvettes and other muscle cars of the late ’60s. As the pushrod V8 has matured and technology advanced, Chevrolet is able to once again offer the potent power plant, this time in the form of the LS7 7.0 liter 505 hp small block. The 427 Editions are unique with the Crystal Red paint and custom black hood strip as well as the bevy of the old-style horsepower logos on the hood and embroidered on the seats. The 427 also pays homage to Wil Cooksey, the Bowling Green Assembly Plant’s manager who just retired. Wil’s focus on quality is one of the reasons why the Corvette scores so well on owner satisfaction surveys. Tommy said this was third 427 Edition to come through Ferman with other two already sold and delivered to customers. This 427 Corvette is signed by Wil Cooksey and is number 370 out of 505.
SuperCarMovies.com has turned their high-definition camera lenses on the Corvette Z06 and the result can only be summed up simply as “breathtaking”. This isn’t just another YouTube video showing the comings and going of America’s super car turned loose on Italy’s twisty old-world roads, its a full cinematic experience showing America’s super car turned loose on Italy’s twisty old-world roads.
While previous SuperCarMovies.com came complete with a plot line, with this movie, the Z06 is the plot line. From the beginning you get a sense that the video you are about see will exceed your expectations. They even filmed the Corvette Z06 in the rain! I didn’t see that coming…
Leaving the confines of a parking garage, the Corvette Z06 is shown first in the rain outside a gorgeous Italian estate. The action then moves to surrounding roads. The Corvette looks very comfortable sliding around the switchbacks and sloping mountainside curves. The views are wonderful and after watching the video, you’ll have a strong urge to go online looking to book travel to southern Europe.
Some have referred to this video as Car Porn. We’re very happy to report that the video is “Safe for Work”. Enjoy some of the photos from the gallery and visit SuperCarMovies.com to watch the movie, available in both High or Standard definition. For those of you who actually prefer YouTube styled movies, I bring you our own 5 Bridges Run video shot last year.

Strategic Vision has released their annual Total Quality Awards and the 2008 Corvette Convertible won the “Convertibles over $30,000″ class besting 3 models from Mercedes-Benz and the BMW Z4 Roadster with a score of 940. This is the second year in row that the Corvette Convertible has won this class, and like last year, finished second overall behind the 950 scored by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Luxury Sedan. The score represents new vehicle owner satisfaction.
The top 5 of the Convertibles over $30,000:
A number of prominent 2008 cars were not included in the results as Strategic Vision claims that the sample size of respondents for a specific model was not sufficient to be included.
Quality and owner satisfaction are two hallmarks of the latest generation of Corvettes. This year’s total quality index score of 940 is up 10 points over 2007′s quality score of 930.
Chevrolet also scored a class win in large pickups with two models tying for the top class score. The Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 and the Silverado 1500 both had a total qaulity index score of 880.
