Video: GM’s Tom Wallace Discusses the 2009 Corvette ZR1

by Keith Cornett on January 12, 2008

We’ve got a lot of information coming out of the General in advance of the Corvette ZR1′s public unveiling during the Detroit auto show. Here is a new video from Tom Wallace, Vehicle Line Executive – GM Performance Cars, discussing the engine, powertrain and brakes of the 2009 Corvette ZR1. Tom walks us through the features that make this Corvette so special and then describes in very simple terms what that means for you. Wallace is obviously excited about this Corvette and his enthusiasm shows.

Video: In the GM Design Dome with the Corvette ZR1

by Keith Cornett on January 11, 2008

GM has invited several of the larger automotive blogs to visit with designers in the GM Design Dome in advance of its appearance at the North American International Auto Show next week. AutoBlog.com was one of the sites invited and here is the interview they did with Corvette Exterior Design Manager Kirk Bennian.

According to AutoBlog, the Corvette you see here is actually a standard Corvette Z06 that the design staff used to test the fit of exterior parts, so its not fitted with its ceramic brakes and that is a LS7 under the hood. Don’t fret though, the real Corvette ZR1 with its state of the art LS9 supercharged V8 under the lexan window will be live Saturday night at the GM style party in Detroit.

I’d also like to add that it would be nice if GM would include a blog dedicated to the Corvette when it doles out these kinds of invitations. In fact, there is a fanatical blogger in Tampa that follows Corvettes and he has a video camera and is willing to travel. Just a thought…

2009 Corvette ZR1 Will Be Unveiled at GM Style Party

by Keith Cornett on January 11, 2008

2009 Corvette ZR1

General Motors will roll out the new 2009 Corvette ZR1 at the GM Style Party on Saturday, January 12th. The annual GM Style party includes musical performances and fashion shows featuring both clothing designs and cars. This year, Detroit’s Kid Rock. Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5 will perform at the event. In the past, Hollywood stars were paired and would walk a runway with selected GM vehicles after the curtain was lifted.

The general public will have their shot to see the supercharged 6.2L King of the Hill during the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) next week.

While we are still waiting for performance estimates and the final price tag which are expected to come as we get closer to the Corvette ZR1′s launch this summer, engineers anticipate the car to achieve a top speed of 200 mph as well as a performance benchmark of 100 hp per liter or 620 horsepower total.

GM Style will be simulcast on gm.com.

2008 Barrett-Jackson Corvette Auction Preview

by Keith Cornett on January 10, 2008

1971 Corvette ZR2 Coupe

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”! No, I’m not still singing Christmas carols, but when the Barrett-Jackson auction rolls around every year, I do get a bit giddy like a kid around Christmas time. Yes, it’s that time of year where chrome, corporate jets, unlimited checkbooks, and gavel to gavel television coverage converge on Scottsdale Arizona for what has become the Super Bowl of automotive auctions. The 37th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction gets under way next week with the first car hitting the block on Tuesday.

Barrett-Jackson announced last year that they would be bringing down the total number of cars in the 2008 Auction from 1,200 to around 1,000. Corvettes are still well represented with 106 currently on the docket, but this is a significant decline from last year’s total of 142 Corvettes that were sold in Scottsdale. What’s also interesting about this list is that the venerable auction favorite, the 1967 Corvette will only be making 7 appearances whereas last year there was over 20 1967 Corvettes that sold.

We’ll be watching a number of cars including the 1963 Rondine Corvette concept, a 1 of 12 1971 ZR2 Corvette Coupe and of course the 2009 Corvette ZR1. We’ll also be watching lot number 1327 closely as there is a whisper campaign underway that this Corvette is not what it seems. We’ll have more on that later.

The full list of Corvettes currently planned for Barrett-Jackson is after the jump. We’ve broken it down so you can see which day the Corvette will be sold. As always, check back throughout the week as we’ll have coverage and videos of selected Corvettes that were sold.

2009 Corvette ZR1 Appearance Scheduled for C5/C6 NCM Bash

by Keith Cornett on January 10, 2008

2009 Corvette ZR1

Unless you happen to be in Detroit next week, your chances of seeing the new 2009 Corvette ZR1 live and in person will be slim to none. The good news is that the new King of the Hill will be the star attraction at this year’s C5/C6 bash at the National Corvette Museum in late April. The annual bash is where the new 2009 Corvettes are introduced to the faithful, complete with walk-arounds and introductions from Corvette’s engineers and managers.

The C5/C6 Bash is planned for April 24-26 at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Make your plans to see the new Corvette ZR1 in person by registering online.

Corvette Market’s C3 Find, Buy & Drive Adventure

by Keith Cornett on January 9, 2008

1969 Corvette ConvertibleKeith Martin and his staff at Corvette Market/Sports Car Market are putting out a call for a C3 Corvette and they need our help. Here is the deal: You find them a decent C3 Corvette to buy and if they decide that’s the one, they’ll wire the funds to the seller. They are looking for delivery as well so you’ll need to be able to drive the Corvette all the way or at least partially the way to their offices in Portland, Oregon.

The staff at Sports Car Market likes to keep half a dozen classic and collector cars on hand at any one time, driving them to shows and weekend cruises. They believe the C3 Corvette Market (1968-1982) represents some of the best Corvette values and adding a chrome-bumper C3 to the stable makes a lot of sense. However, not just any C3 Corvette will do as they are being specific in what they are looking for:

  • 1968-1972 Convertible
  • Matching numbers small block
  • 4-Speed manual transmission
  • Air conditioning
  • Quality condition

And to make things even more interesting, they have budgeted just $20,000 for you to make the deal, although they are willing to pay less. If you find and deliver the Corvette, they’ll put you up in a hotel for a couple of nights, show you the sights and even provide some cool swag like a Corvette Market hat and bag! But the biggest thrill may be seeing your C3 Corvette buying adventure immortalized in print for all the Collector car world to see.

So if you’ve got an early C3 in the garage or know where one can be had on the cheap, because they are looking for quality, then send an email to Keith Martin @ Corvette Market with the details. Click here for more specifics on Corvette Market’s C3 Find, Buy & Drive Adventure.

I vaguely remember seeing this commercial for Chevrolet and the Corvette during Dick Clark’s Rockin New Years Eve program and was just sober coherent enough to hit the Tivo’s record button. Seeing it now I can remember feeling the emotional tugs at the heartstrings that Chevrolet’s ad men do so well. But then again, that could have easily been the Crown Royal talking.

The commercial shows various Chevy’s and then we see a base red Corvette coupe getting put through its paces in a downtown setting. When the Corvette first comes on screen, the voice over says “We believe that passion leads to extraordinary things”. Another nice touch is having the halo car sandwiched between the Volt concept and the 2009 Camaro.

One observation I had was both the announcer and the on screen graphics at the end of the spot refer to Chevrolet at Chevy and even the web URL is Chevy.com. I do like the fact they used the sixty second format to feature all the vehicles in the Chevy stable while playing up the fuel solutions angle that we are starting to see in all their recent commercials. So while there is nothing in the spot that is ground-breaking, it is, in this former ad man’s opinion, a well done commercial.

As I discussed in Saturday’s video blog post, there is a steering wheel on the 2009 Corvette ZR1 that is not on any of the 2008 Corvettes. This new steering wheel has two buttons on the left side that allow the driver to view information displayed on the DIC. The top button chooses the information or moves through the screens. The bottom button with the arrow is used for selecting the menu.

These function buttons show up on several other GM vehicles including the Chevrolet Silverado, Malibu and the Saturn Sky. Below you see the 2009 Corvette ZR1′s steering wheel and a similar (albeit more advanced) steering wheel of the 2008 Saturn Sky.

2009 Corvette ZR1 Steering Wheel 2008 Saturn Sky Steering Wheel

We’re going to make an assumption that this new wheel will also be standard on the 2009 base and Z06 models. It seems controlling your DIC while keeping your hands on the wheel is a fairly reasonable feature and there’s not much reason why it would be offered exclusively to ZR1 buyers.

Now how about those cruise control buttons!

Thanks for the tip George!

by Keith Cornett on January 5, 2008

I’ve been debating doing a video blog post for sometime now and decided that with the recent events, now was as good as time as any. This first attempt is pretty rough I’ll admit and it remains to be seen how well it will be received. Please leave a comment with your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Contents of Episode V1.1 include:

  • A new feature is spied and a missing badge on the Corvette ZR1.
  • A rant against the signature Indy 500 Pace Car
  • A preview of things to come for the 2009 Corvette
  • Noland Adams book is back!
