With all the high-tech gadgetry on today’s modern vehicles, you’d think it would be harder for thieves to steal them.

But the latest figures compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) don’t support that theory. In fact, 2023 was another record-setting year for vehicle thefts, with more than 1 million vehicles stolen from their owners, up about 1 percent over the previous year.

“Criminals are employing increasingly sophisticated methods to steal vehicles, including the use of advanced technology to bypass security systems,” says David J. Glawe, President and CEO of NICB. “From keyless entry hacks to relay attacks on key fobs, perpetrators are exploiting vulnerabilities in modern vehicle security measures with alarming success rates. It is critical that industry and law enforcement work together to develop more effective strategies for combating auto theft and safeguarding public safety.”

While thefts declined in some regions, urban centers and densely populated areas remained hotspots for auto theft, with the District of Columbia and Maryland experiencing a drastic rise in thefts in 2023, both increasing more than 60 percent year over year. California and Florida, meanwhile, ranked 1-2 in the nation on the number of thefts.

Indeed, we just told you about a recent bust of a California chop shop that was raided as it was taking apart 10 stolen Camaros and two hot Corvettes worth about $600,000.

NICB says it’s working with state and federal law enforcement to battle the problem. “Addressing the rising tide of vehicle thefts demands collaborative partnerships involving law enforcement agencies, government bodies, automotive manufacturers, and the community at large,” Glawe says. “The repercussions of vehicle theft extend beyond financial losses, causing significant distress and inconvenience for affected individuals. Beyond the financial burden of replacing stolen vehicles and repairing damages, victims often endure emotional stress and disruption to their daily routines.”

As for what you can do personally to help prevent vehicle thefts, NICB suggests these tips:

• Park in well-lit areas.
• Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
• Hide valuables out of sight, such as in the glove box or trunk.
• Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
• Do not leave the area while your vehicle is running.

If your vehicle is stolen, call law enforcement and your insurer immediately because reporting a vehicle as soon as possible after it is stolen increases the chance of recovery. If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, call the NICB at 1-800-TEL-NICB.

  1. Much of the increase can be attributed to the lack of security on Hyundai and Kia cars. OMG, these things are so easy to swipe. I have both a Ring Doorbell and an app called Citizen. I don’t think a week went by without 2 or 3 cars being reported stolen. Now, since Hyundai upgraded their security, this has dropped off, a lot. Or else they have given up reporting them!
