There are restorations, and then there are RESTORATIONS!
This 1956 Corvette being auctioned off on eBay is an example of the latter, if you are looking for a car that’s been restored to the strict standards of the National Corvette Restorers Society.
We’re sad to see that the seller – after owning this vintage Corvette since the early 1990s and beginning a frame-off restoration in 2010 – has now for unspecified reasons decided to part with the car before being totally finished with the project.
Over the past 14 years, he’s used a collection of mostly original parts, combined with some new old stock parts and a few authentic General Motors restoration parts to bring the car near the finish line.
The matching numbers 265 V8 engine is still under the hood, but it’s been connected to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission (instead of the factory three-speed manual).
The rebuilt engine cold-starts immediately with fast idle choke activating properly and idling down upon warm-up, the seller reports, who explains that it’s a smooth-running engine with a slight lope due to the installation of a cam similar to the 1957 Duntov cam, one of the original speed parts that came along after the ’55 debut of the V8.
Elsewhere mechanically, the car has new brakes, wheel bearings, and lines, and the brake master and wheel cylinders have been stainless steel sleeved.
The car also features an all-new Al Knoch interior, seats (with the original seat tracks), carpet, kick panels, and door panels. Al Knoch also provided a dated convertible top, and the original unrestored hardtop and trim is included, along with new door weatherstripping that will need to be installed.
The car is painted with black lacquer with silver coves, and a gallon and a quart of unmixed onyx black paint is available with the car, which equates to more than three gallons of sprayable color, according to the seller.
So far, the high bid is surprisingly low for a car of this caliber, with eight bids reaching $56,901 with the auction coming to a close Tuesday night. What do you think the reserve figure is for this black beauty to find a new home?

A really,really nice car. Surprised it’s on eBay,but with a reserve the owner may just be testing the waters. I’ve used eBay for that and had good results.
Seems to me that eBay has too many bidders who play games and don’t go through with buying the car that they won the auction for. This is a super nice looking 56.
