Each April 27th, 427 Day pays homage to the thumping 427 cubic inch engines that powered 2nd, 3rd, and 6th generation Corvettes. As the horsepower wars escalated in the 1960’s, we first caught site of a 427 engine at Daytona in 1963. The 427 version of the “Rat” motor eventually found its way into production in 1966 as RPO L36 pumping out 390 or 425hp. From there, it would evolve over the next few years. 1967 gave us 3 2-barrell carburetors known as tripower putting out 400 or 435hp. That was also the first year of the 3-year run for the legendary L88. After 1969, the 427 engine vanished until 2006 when the C6 Z06 made its debut. Finally, the 427 engine spawned its own special edition in 2013 with the 427 Convertible model.
