Corvette Racing wrapped up the 2009 ALMS season with a bang yesterday at the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. However, since the race is tape-delayed, we’re holding off on our post race coverage until after the race airs this afternoon. Bruce Willis Sells his 1967 Corvette Convertible

This custom maroon/black 1967 Corvette sure has a lot going for it. Celebrity ownership by an A-list Hollywood actor is just one of the reasons why we tuned to SPEED tonight. This numbers matching 427/435 horsepower L71 Corvette Convertible has all the options of the iconic 1967 sting ray: Convertible body, stinger hood, sidepipes and knock-offs. Throw in the celebrity component and you’ll see why it fetched $150,000 at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Las Vegas.

The story which has been often repeated this weekend is that Willis purchased the Corvette in El Paso during filming of “Last Man Standing”. While the Corvette is mostly stock, Bruce had the car custom-painted. An Alpine 5-CD Changer stashed in the glove box completes the customizations.

In the promotional pictures the Corvette was shown wearing a set of S/S Cragars, but at the auction you see a set of midyear knock-offs on the car, perhaps from 1966 as suggested by one of the commentators. Just goes to show that just because the catalog says so doesn’t make it true. Do you own due diligence!

The ’67 Corvette was previously offered at Bonhams California Classic last year where it was a no sale. Bidding on the classic Sting Ray was fast and furious at Barrett-Jackson where it finally hammered at $150,000. With the buyer’s commission, the total sales prices was $165,000.

Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2009: 1961 Corvette Convertible

As we moved we deeper into the docket of Corvettes available at Barrett-Jackson’s collector car auction in Las Vegas, we’re starting to see more classic Corvettes on the auction block. This 1961 Tuxedo Black Corvette appeared late on Friday night’s auction and was the first C1 Corvette to be featured this weekend.

The 1961 Corvette featured a restyled front grill without the “heavy teeth” and on the rear there are now 4 taillights instead of 2, a Corvette tradition to this day. This 1961 Corvette features the 283/230 hp V8 and a 3-speed manual transmission – all included on the base model that sold for $3,934 when new. Tuxedo black was the 5th most popular color (out of 7) and was chosen by 12% of buyers.

This 1961 Corvette was purchased by a woman who the SPEED commentators said had one of the busiest pens all day. Sort of breaks from the stereotype of Corvettes owners are all balding middle-aged men suffering through a mid-life crisis. The Corvette was hammered at $52,000 and with the buyers commission, total price was $57,200. Even though the Corvette comes equipped with just the basics, the price is spot-on for a base 1961 Corvette with major curb appeal.

1993 Corvette Sells for $23,100

The 1964 Corvette Sting Ray has always been the step-child of the mid-year C2 Corvette generation. Combine that fact with a non-original motor and a color combination that wasn’t the most popular and you have all the makings of a lackluster auction. However, this is Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas and that can only mean that this recently restored 1964 Saddle Tan Corvette performed well on the auction block.

This 1964 Corvette features a Saddle Tan interior, a color chosen by just 8% of buyers. Despite the fact the Corvette is missing its original engine, the non original motor may actually be termed an upgrade as it’s an L79 327/350 hp V8 from a 1967 Corvette. Complete with Corvette-fined manifold covers and a 1964-styled air cleaner, the 1967 Corvette small block looks right at home in the engine bay. Other upgrades include disc brakes, which didn’t appear on Corvettes until 1965.

Bidding on this Sting Ray convertible was strong from the beginning and shot right up to $50,000. The hammer closed out the sale at $55,000 and with the buyers commission added, the total sale rang up at $60,500. A strong price for a non-original Corvette, but not out of the ballpark for a recently restored mid-year convertible.

Magnussen Wins First Pole for new GT2 Corvette C6.R

Jan Magnussen won the the first pole in Corvette Racing’s GT2 era (soon to be just GT) Friday afternoon at Laguna Seca. Mags ran a fastest lap time of 1:23.053 to take the pole at the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Laguna Seca. Oliver Gavin and the #4 Corvette C6.R finished third behind the #62 Ferrari with a lap of 1:23.283.

With today’s effort, Mangussen wins his 10th career ALMS pole and his third straight at Laguna Seca (two in GT1 and one in GT2).

“The Michelins came in really quickly and I kept going faster and faster,” said Magnussen, “In practice I didn’t expect to be fighting for the pole, but we expected to be up near the front. It seemed at the end of every session, the Porsches or Ferrari would do a very fast lap and put us down the order a little bit. To be on pole is just fantastic.”

“The way that we set up the Corvette C6.R, it’s not a qualifying setup – it’s a race setup,” he said. “It’s made to go faster every lap. Obviously we cannot run this fast in the beginning of the race because we will have a lot more fuel, and we’ll expect the car to behave a little differently, but it should go faster and faster. We’ve had a history of doing that.”

Just as the cars got out on the track for qualifying, a race broke out between Oliver Gavin and the #87 Porsche. Gavin was able to get inside and then had clear road to begin his runs.

Gavin jumped from fifth to third on the qualifying list with his final effort.

“The car was going faster and faster as the tires were coming in,” Gavin said. “The car felt very good, but not absolutely perfect, with a touch of mid-corner understeer. Catching traffic on the final lap was a bit frustrating, but Jan had to pass him as well. You always want to be quick, and we’re in the hunt, but not on the pole. Well done to Jan, he did a great job.”

Corvette Racing closes out 2009 at the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. The four-hour race is scheduled to start at 2:45 PM PDT on Saturday, October 10. SPEED will broadcast the race tape-delayed on Sunday, October 11, at 2:30 p.m. EDT.

1993 Corvette Sells for $23,100

Regular production C4 Corvettes aren’t really known for their collectability yet, but sometimes one comes along that piques our interest and this 1993 Arctic White Corvette Coupe did just that as it crossed the auction block on Thursday evening at Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas Collector Car auction. Apparently I wasn’t alone in my thoughts as Lot #93 was hammered for a strong price of $21,000. With the buyer’s premium, the total selling price was $23,100.

The C4 Corvettes marked an interesting time period for the Corvettes and some will argue that Corvette’s return to premium sports cars status started with the iconic 1984 Corvette. However, the differences between the first Corvettes of the C4 generation compare greatly to those cars after 1992 when the C4 received the LT1 350 cubic inch 300 horsepower V8 engine.

SPEED’s announcers particularly liked this Corvette and called it the perfect compliment for the guy who also owned a 1953 Corvette. While we believe there are only about 150-170 of “those guys” out there with a first year Corvette in the garage, we agree that a White with Red interior Corvette does make the perfect the anniversary model even when though the true 40th anniversary models were Ruby Red.

Only 15,898 Corvette coupes were produced in 1993 so the model year doesn’t suffer from over-production which keeps prices down. Arctic white was the third most popular color (3,031) coming in behind the Rub Red anniversary color (6749) and Torch Red (3,172).

This Corvette features the Corvette Preferred Equipment Group #1 option which provides electronic air conditioning, Delco/Bose music system, electronically tuned AM/FM stereo, radio with Seek-Scan, digital clock stereo cassette tape, compact disc player, blue removable roof panel, leather sport bucket seats, 6-way power driver’s seat and 6-way passenger power seat.

Being in mint condition with just 26,072 miles on the odometer and documentation also helped push this Corvette’s value higher.

Our Corvette Price Guide shows a high price of $15,000 for standard 1993 Corvette coupes while the high price on a Corvette convertible of the same year was more than double that at $34,500. So while the buyer paid a premium for that particular model, the price was still consistent with other models from the same year. Of further note is that we still show the standard 1993 coupes depreciation at just 6% last year which is the lowest percentage of Corvettes from 1993. The convertible models from 1993 show double-digit depreciation of 12% last year.

Based on the condition of the Corvette, we believe both buyer and seller should be happy with the outcome of this sale.

Corvette Racing Wraps Up GT2 Testing at Monterey's Laguna Seca

This Saturday is the final race of the 2009 American Le Mans series and for Corvette Racing, it will be the last opportunity for testing and evaluating the new GT2 Corvettes during actual combat conditions. The factory-backed Corvettes have used the final five races to test the GT2 C6.R Corvettes ahead of a full-bore assault on the unified GT Championship in 2010.

By all accounts the testing of the GT2 Corvettes has been successful. In the four races run by the new Corvette C6.Rs, the team finished first at Mosport, second at Mid-Ohio, third at Road America and ran much of the rain-soaked race at Petit Le Mans first and second before dropping to 4th when the race was called.

“By any standard, it’s clear that Corvette Racing’s GT2 development plan has been successful,” said Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. “It’s not only our results on the race track – although that is certainly important – but the fact that at each successive event we’ve learned more about the GT2 Corvette C6.R race cars. They have been more consistent, quicker, and more competitive. That is exactly what we would have expected if we’d conducted a test program in private.”

Despite the fact that the team looks at this weekend’s race at Monterey’s Laguna Seca as another test session, it’s an important test as the raceway doesn’t host private track testing. So the team’s only chance to acquire data on how the GT2 Corvettes handle the sandy track conditions comes Saturday.

“Laguna Seca is something of a mystery for us, as it is for many teams,” Fehan explained. “The track surface can vary greatly from day to day, so there is always a question of grip. We’ve engineered more mechanical grip into the GT2 Corvette than in any previous Corvette race car, so we’re very eager to see whether that proves to be an advantage. This race will be our only opportunity to test at Laguna Seca before we return next year in earnest, so it is important to gather as much data as possible.”

Team manager Gary Pratt sees tires as a key to success at Laguna Seca. “Laguna has traditionally been a low-grip track, and I expect it to be the same this year,” he said. “The lack of grip there was a problem for us until we partnered with Michelin. Michelin has always brought tires that suit the track, and that could be an advantage for us in a four-hour race. Most of the corners are medium-speed, with hard braking in Turn 11 before the pit straight. Consequently Laguna Seca is a momentum track where the drivers need to carry their speed through the corners. I think the GT2 Corvettes will do that very well.

“We’ve been able to find a good balance with the GT2 Corvette’s aero package so it is not as ‘edgy’ as the GT1 car,” Pratt continued. “This makes the GT2 Corvette more predictable and the drivers more confident in traffic. We’ve always been a little anxious about running in wet conditions, but the GT2 Corvette has proven to be very good in the rain with its wide track and good balance. The drivers like it, and I’m not so hesitant about practicing on a wet track.”

This Corvette Z06 was parked at the entrance of the Corvette Corral at last week’s Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. I had asked around for the owner but we never did hook up so details on this conversion are light at best. But obviously, the owner is a huge Corvette racing fan and his Z06 nearly replicates the look of the GT1 Corvette C6.Rs.
