Corvettes for Sale: 1966 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Coupe on Bring a Trailer

Everywhere you turn these days, you seem to run into dilapidated Corvettes that have been ignored by their owners for decades.

That’s why it’s refreshing to see a three-owner 1966 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Coupe that’s been tenderly cared for over the decades, instead of being turned into a makeshift condo for rats and other critters while the car was sitting neglected in somebody’s barn.

Through an auction on Bring a Trailer, where the high bid is an insulting $25,066 though four days remain for that number to rise, this vintage black on black C2 is looking for just its fourth owner. The original owner kept the car for nearly 20 years, finally parting with it in April 1984, and the third owner subsequently bought it another 19 years later in 2003.

Now, after 22 years of careful stewardship, he’s ready to pass the torch to someone else. Based on previous history, you might want to jump on this car because it may not be for sale again until around 2045.

One of the owners – it’s not identified which one – added a third taillight on each side, which was a common modification back in the day. After all, two taillights on a Chevy sedan back in the ‘60s meant it was a lowly Biscayne or Bel Air, not the more sophisticated Impala and Caprice. Corvette owners at the time probably thought adding an extra taillight on each side would make their cars more impressive!

Starting life in Milano Maroon with an original list price of $4,863.91 (based on a sales receipt from Jan. 11, 1966 from O’Leary Chevrolet), the car was subsequently repainted black in 1986 by the second owner, who eventually replaced the original black vinyl seats with leather covers in 1997. That receipt also claims the car has a 350 engine, which couldn’t be the case since that wasn’t available in a Chevy until 1967 (Camaro only) and 1969 in other models like the Corvette. Any ideas from our readers on this snafu?

It’s particularly nice to see a vintage Corvette with such good paint, along with an interior that appears to need nothing but a new rear end sitting in it. We especially are impressed with the condition of the gauge cluster, center stack, and glovebox door of this car.

Other features include power steering, side exhaust pipes, retractable antenna, heater, AM/FM radio, lap belts, and Positraction.

Are we being too generous in our appraisal of this car, or do you agree it’s one impressive Sting Ray?

  1. Presumably the reference on the sales invoice to a “350 Engine” was intended to reflect that the car was equipped with the 350hp version of the 327, being one of the optional engines available for the 1966 model year.

  2. Nice Vette! The current bid, as of 4:30 PM on 11-5-25, is $28,000. That’s interesting to me because back in 1975, I bought a silver 1965 Coupe, 327/300, 4-speed, side pipes, and ’67 steel wheels. I paid $2,800! And my father yelled at me, “You paid $2,800 for a TEN-YEAR-OLD CHEVY! And it doesn’t even have a back seat!” He almost called me, “MEATHEAD!”

  3. Compared to the other C2’s for sale that have been featured on here lately that are either too rough or too stupid looking with their over modified pointed nose front ends, this car is an impressive winner!

  4. IF the engine is correct, as DougR mentioned (Option L79 327/350), the car could be brought up to NCRS standards. There are some things to be corrected/restored but, relatively speaking, the car certainly has potential. I’ve seen worse brought back!
