Red on Red 1961 Roadster Heading to Mecum Tulsa this Weekend

It’s often said that “all Corvettes are red”. It was even the title of the popular book chronicling the development of the 5th generation Corvette. That mantra certainly applies to this striking 1961 Corvette crossing the block at Mecum Tulsa this coming Saturday. It’s one of over 30 Corvettes looking for new homes in Oklahoma.

1961 was the penultimate year of C1 production with the groundbreaking 1963 Corvette just a couple years away. With that, we got a small peak of things to come thanks to the redesigned rear end. Exhaust now exited under the car rather than through the bumpers and aluminum radiators became standard. Other than that, model year changes were pretty minimal.

Roman Red was the 2nd most popular color in 1961 with 1,794 units being painted in the classic Corvette hue. From there owners could select white or body color coves as well as red or black interior.

This late C1 heading to Mecum Tulsa this weekend went the all-red route with red paint, red coves, red interior, and don’t forget the matching red hardtop. All that red is balanced out with a white soft top and wide white wall tires.

Power comes from the matching numbers 283/245hp engine which sports dual 4-barrel carburetors and 7-fin aluminum valve covers. A 4-speed manual transmission allows the driver to select the gear of their choosing. Other features include a wonderbar radio, power windows, and spinner hubcaps. Add all that up and you’ve got a highly attractive first-generation Corvette.

The car is being sold out of the Schroeder Family Collection this weekend at Mecum’s Tulsa auction. The auction listing shows a presale estimate of $75,000 – $85,000.
