Maybe the LT2 rumble should’ve just been the soundtrack. Instead, police say the driver of a C8 Corvette Stingray had his music cranked so loud on Tuesday night that it triggered a traffic stop — and everything unraveled from there.
Miami Beach Police say the encounter began just after 10 p.m. on Ninth Street, east of Collins Avenue, when an officer approached 26 year old Anthony Banks of Atlanta, Georgia about violating “the City of Miami Beach Loud Music Ordinance.” What should have been a simple citation quickly escalated.
According to the arrest report, the officer asked Banks for his license and instructed him not to move the vehicle. Banks replied that he was “just going to back up” — but instead, police say he dropped the hammer, accelerating away in the Corvette and slamming into a marked patrol car in the process. We don’t think the damage will buff out of either car.
Surveillance video captured the moment the officer tried to stop him.
“Stop, stop the [expletive] car,” the officer shouted, weapon drawn, as the Corvette lurched away.
A witness watching from the sidewalk summed up the escape:
“It took the corner and took off.”
Detectives canvassed nearby businesses for footage, including the Sherbrooke Hotel. Owner Mitch Novick reviewed his cameras and handed over a clear angle of the impact.
“I found the footage and shared it with them,” Novick said. “The Corvette smashed into the marked unit.”
License plate readers later picked up the Stingray heading out of Miami Beach along the MacArthur Causeway. A regional alert went out, and hours later, City of Miami officers located Banks at the 24/7 Car Wash on Northeast Second Avenue — where investigators say he was attempting to wash away evidence from the Corvette.
Banks was taken into custody and remains in jail, with a court appearance expected Wednesday, according to 7News Miami reporter Olivia Diventi.
