Update
This blog post was part of the annual April Fool’s Day gags that many automotive websites like to post, and it’s not real news. If we got you, then good, mission success! If you saw through it, good for you too! Ever since I first saw crabwalk demonstrated on the Hummer, I’ve been thinking about how to use that in an April Fools story, and the E-Ray was the perfect vehicle to tie in. But April Fools Day is now over and we want to make sure that people know that this was a joke going forward. Thanks again for playing along!

When the 2022 GMC Hummer EV was launched, there was one feature that nearly blew everyone’s mind and that was CrabWalk – a unique 4-wheel steer mode that offers greater vehicle maneuverability when parking. Well, Corvette Nation, we got some exciting news as the new 2024 Corvette E-Ray will have its own version of CrabWalk included when the hybrid performance sports car is released later this year.

Thanks to a source who got us access to some of the E-Ray’s early documentation, we discovered the CrabWalk feature in a PDF detailing the E-Ray’s custom gauge displays. We were definitely perplexed about an orange Crab symbol appearing in the lower right corner of the Driver Information Center (DIC). It turns out that the icon lights up when the rear wheels are “unlocked” and CrabWalk is engaged.

The more we kept digging, the more we found about this new feature, so we reached out to Chevy late Friday to let them know what we discovered. Thankfully, the PR team put us in touch with one of the Corvette engineers on the E-Ray team, Zorita Duntovia.

According to Zorita, CrabWalk can be accessed from the Drive Mode Selector by turning the mode selector dial all the way to the right and holding it for 6 seconds. That’s when the orange crab symbol lights up on the dash telling us it’s active. When CrabWalk is engaged, the rear suspension is unlocked and the rear wheels can be slightly angled up to 6 degrees so that four-wheel steering is active. It’s not as fully functional as the 10 degrees that the Hummer is capable of, and Zorita says that’s due to the 345-sized Michelin rear tires. She adds that the four wheel steering at 6-degrees is still enough of an angle that allows you to park or exit a parking spot with more clearance.

We begged for a video of the E-Ray parking with CrabWalk engaged, and Zorita says the Corvette Team is making plans on fully demonstrating the E-Ray’s CrabWalk mode in public for the first time at the NCM Bash in late April. We can’t wait to check it out!!

Currently, the system is only designed for very low speeds (up to 1.2 mph) and it does function when you are in Stealth Mode as well. The E-Ray’s CrabWalk will only be available with the ZER performance package, of which those final details will be revealed at the NCM Bash as well.

Zorita did say the team is working on a high-speed version of the four wheel steering for autocrossing as well. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until the next April Fool’s Day! to make that feature public.

  1. The real April Fool’s joke would have been to tell everyone that production of the basic Stingray coupe has been ramped up and must be sold at MSRP.

  2. I came so close to sending this off to my brother but waited until I read the whole article. Glad I waited. Good one, Corvette Blogger and nice touch with the graphics.

  3. First tip off was the engineer named “Duntovia”!! Great fun, and just another way to appreciate GM’s ingenuity!

  4. Hahah thats a good one ! Actually the name was probably an outtake of The Godfather of The Corvette Zora Arkus-Duntov !
