It’s always nice when our financial betters share a little glimpse of their world with us proles. That was the entire premise of shows like Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and later MTV Cribs. Modern demand for similar behind-the-scenes content has spawned countless wrinkles such as Below Deck, Jay Leno’s Garage, and pretty much everything on Instagram.
In the same vein as our guy Leno, many wealthy car collectors have turned to YouTube to both showoff/kindly share their experiences and monetize their respective stables of high-end four-wheeled investments. With the C8 Corvette going nuclear the last couple of years with not one, but two 1,000+ HP variants, it’s cool to see America’s Sports Car not only gaining respect, but actually showing up in the collections of these .1 percenters. Case in point; none other than Supercar Ron, today’s presenter and friend of the Koenigsegg Jesko guy from a few weeks ago.
Ron – luckily a much easier watch than the Jesko dude – and an enthusiastic young ward recently took a pair of the elder’s toys to the Utah track formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park to see if the hype around the new ZR1 still holds water at altitude. Its foil in today’s informal test is the third example of Lamborghini’s current V12 halo car to grace Ron’s collection. For more than $800,000, his special-order Verde Ermes (green) over Terra Emilia (orange/tan) Revuelto combines a killer-sounding 814-horsepower naturally aspirated V12 with hybrid assistance for total system output of 1,001 HP and 1,044 lb-ft. of twist. These impressive figures motivate all four wheels, and according to Car and Driver, propel the 4,290-lb. Italian exotic through the quarter in just 9.7 seconds at 148 mph, hitting 60 and 100 in 2.2 and 4.6 seconds, respectively, on the way to the checkered flag.
Not many cars in the world for any amount of money can hold their figurative head high around a Revuelto, but the C8 ZR1 isn’t any regular car. In fact, it was neat to see our hosts – both regular operators of some of the world’s fastest and most exclusive automobiles – admit they didn’t think the more than 3x as expensive Lambo stood a chance against Chevy’s working man’s hypercar. It’s one of the industry’s worst kept secrets that the ZR1’s twin-turbo LT7 V8 is somehow significantly underrated by its makers at an already excessive 1,064 HP and 828 torques. The big-winged and around $250,000 kid from Kentucky makes do with rear wheel drive but makes up for a possible traction disadvantage by burdening its massive stable of ponies with fewer pounds (3,831). C&D achieved very similar numbers on their first chance behind the ZR1’s squircle steering wheel, hitting 60 in an identical 2.2 ticks, barely beating the Lambo to 100 in 4.5 seconds, and stopping the quarter mile timer at 9.5 seconds whilst traveling 149 mph.
The Utah campus’ lack of a true strip meant the fun part of the video would be all roll races. This equalizes the Lambo’s greatest advantage, meaning the Italian will have to lean on the slipperier shape of its bodywork with active aero disengaged while the ZR1 enters the ring with a parachute of a fixed rear wing. After the nice touch of the iconic Mario Kart countdown, both parties hit the right pedal from an even 40 mph. We won’t spoil the surprisingly convincing outcome, but on the way back to the start line, we’re treated to a CarWow-approved – read: excuse riddled – breakdown of the intricacies the first run. A second try yields an even more conclusive result, prompting a driver swap to test the theory that the baby-faced driver doesn’t know what he’s doing. It’s all rendered moot by one car’s obvious superiority that continues into a third and fourth race as the snow starts to fall.
See the results below and be mindful of some formerly out-of-character Corvette traits that the ZR1 remedies. While the first ‘Vette that could seriously take on Sant’Agata’s best was panned for its “Poor seats and lackluster interior,” and piled on for looking “barely more special than a regular Corvette,” this version of the King of the Hill is praised for having better-fitting thrones than its ultra-expensive foe and looking possibly even more extreme than the top shelf offering from the brand that wrote the book on exciting sheet metal. Great job, Corvette team; what a time to be alive!
