The weathered old building – mostly white but with streaks of red and black – shows no signs of the treasure hidden inside it for the past 34 years.

But parked inside that decaying structure since 1989 has been a vintage C3 Corvette Stingray coupe.

Recently, though, the old Chevy was rescued from its decades of neglect that had severely coated it with grime and even disintegrated the urethane bumpers on both ends.

Robby Layton of Car Detailing Restoration details the massive cleanup in a new 31-minute video on his YouTube channel.

From the time Robby and crew vacuum the outside of the car and remove the rusty chrome luggage rack to begin the cleanup, it takes a lot of elbow grease to bring this car back to life. Don’t miss the “biggest rat’s nest” they’ve ever found in a project car, one that fills up an entire storage compartment behind the seats.

But the final results are definitely worth it, though we aren’t too crazy about that ugly brown paint even if it does still shine.

Fortunately, once Robby sees the engine turn over before the cleanup begins and he agrees to buy the car from owner Terri, he says he is considering a new color.

The morale of this video is that if you ever think a nasty car is just too far gone to come back from the grave, think again.

  1. That 1974 code 68L Dark Brown Metallic is not ugly. It is a beautiful deep brown (when waxed and in the sunshine) and, when mated to the Saddle interior (as in the video), those Corvettes looked sharp. The 1974 Dark Brown (WA4328) is a one-year color and was a different formula than the 1976, 1978, 1979, and 1980 Dark Brown (all of those were GM paint code WA4518). However the WA4518 formula that was on the other four model-years had a different order code (trim tag code) each year. In yearly order, the code was 69L, 89L, 67L, and 47L.

  2. Unfortunately that is not a 74. A 74 front end would not have the knotch in the front bumper & would it not have the bumperets.

I have a 74 big block in dark poly brown it is an incredible color that is a crowd favorite at shows.
