[VIDEO] 1970 Corvette Receives First Wash After Being Stored Outside for the Last 16 Years

Some folks just don’t know how to treat a Corvette.

Just take a look at this 1970 big-block coupe, shown being cleaned up for the first time after being neglected outdoors for the past 16 years!

Despite being “probably one of the dirtiest cars I’ve detailed,” Mad Details still manages to bring this yellow Stingray back to life in his latest YouTube video.

In fact, before accepting the challenge, he points out that it’s the first time he’s ever seen a “legitimate lawn” growing on the carpet.

The before-and-after photos at the end of the video reveal quite an amazing transformation, though obviously, this isn’t a car you’d want to seek Bloomington Gold with.

Still, since only 17,316 units left the St. Louis factory for the 1970 model year, every one of them is worth trying to save, if at all possible, especially one that still has its original 454/390 horsepower monster residing under the hood. Indeed, only 4,473 of these big-block Stingrays were built, with owners shelling out an additional $289.65 for that privilege.

Not surprisingly, after such a long period of neglect, reviving the car does take several steps, so it’s not a task for the weak-at-heart. Once the algae and other crud have been washed off, the detailer uses various chemicals and polishes to get as much shine as possible out of the exterior. The same holds true for the interior, where Mad Details takes pains not to damage the instrument panel any more than it is and manages to bring it back to acceptability, at least on the video. Even the animal-infested engine compartment looks much better with a little elbow grease applied.

Of course, some things just can’t be fixed, like the lawn that had been feasting on the carpet for years. That’s an easy fix, though, and installation of new carpet goes a long way toward creating an acceptable spot inside for the occupants. Likewise, some pretty massive touch-ups on the outside – where cleaning actually did take some of the paint off because the crud had attached to it – add to the exterior appeal of the car, at least from 15 feet or so.

If you’ve got 40 minutes to spare, this video is worth taking a look at to understand just what all it takes to rejuvenate an old Corvette that’s been left to fend for itself under a tree since 2006.
