What a month of speed for the Chevrolet Corvette and, by association, the general state of national motoring pride in the United States! The major ‘Vette headline of October easily goes to the upcoming 1,064-horse 2025 ZR1’s continual demolition of expectations with the announcement of its mind-blowing 233 MPH top speed, but a recent Crossed-Flags record out of Arkansas needs to be on your radar!
Just a few days before the LT7 monster’s new highwater mark for factory GM performance cars was announced, C6 owner Kelly Bise achieved another eye-popping feat in his humble 15-year-old Cyber Gray C6 Z06. Bise reported to the Razorback State’s ECTS Motorsports Top Speed Event in his, let’s say not quite stock, Z, and he wasn’t there to take any prisoners.
Curious what “not quite stock” means? Let’s dive into Kelly’s extensive mods list! The car’s original LS7 was replaced with a 427-cube LSX that swaps aluminum construction for cast iron. The target market for this “heavy” version of the LS7 consists of racers and hotrodders looking to run 20-30 psi of boost. Mr. Bise finds himself front and center in that specific cohort. His 7.0L is running twin precision turbos (76/75 mm) that boost rear-wheel output to a staggering 2,200 horsepower! Rounding out the main points of the Kelly-spec are a six-speed sequential transmission and an RPM Stage 5 axle with 3.15 gears. Luxury appointments like the electric seats and sound system were surprisingly left intact, making this street-legal super-vette all the more impressive.
The results of Kelly’s standing mile run are staggering. His pumped-up ’09 Z crossed the half-mile at 216.138 MPH on its way to an LS-powered one-mile world record of 263.93 MPH! Unfortunately, an overflowing of oil limited Kelly from making any successive runs, but the record was still his, and based on the infectious grin on his face, that was the goal all along, single pass or not!

Impressive!
This Vette has got it going on! I love it’s looks, paint, wheels, stance, sound and performance!
Congratulations to Mr. Kelly Bise and the entire KBR team!
You have shown how it is done with a very limited budget and good old American ingenuity and perseverance (blood sweat and tears).
While the factory Corvette C8 team has been upstaged and humiliated again, with their corporate multi million dollar budgets and highly educated engineering staff achieved only 233 mph, a true “David vs Goliath” story.
The final take away, a front engine, technologically outdated C6 with Brazilian balsa wood floor construction has clearly demonstrated a low cost approach to setting world speed records, in one of our beloved “front engine” Corvettes of yesteryear.
Many thanks,
Ray
