Corvettes for Sale: Custom 1972 Corvette with an Eckler's Hatchback

The C3 Corvette has never been known for practicality, but this custom 1972 Corvette T-Top coupe was built to solve that problem decades ago.

Ironically, the car is now for sale because the current owner has run out of storage space — something this modified Stingray has in rare supply.

Now listed for $25,000 on Craigslist out of Sevierville, Tennessee, this uniquely modified Stingray features a rare Eckler’ss one piece hatchback conversion, giving the classic Corvette something it was never known for — real cargo access.

Originally an LT-1 car — one of just 1,741 produced, verified by VIN — this Corvette underwent a professional custom transformation in the late 1970s. The work included:

• An Eckler’s hatchback tail section from the doors back
• A later model front end
• A two tone repaint in the original shade of War Bonnet Yellow (upper) and Dark Brown (lower), separated by pinstriping and a gold leaf stripe

It’s a look that stands out even among custom C3s, and the seller notes it “draws attention at any show.”

Inside, the car sports a Deluxe Saddle leather interior and a long list of comfort and convenience upgrades:

• Power windows
• Rare gold Moon Roof T Tops
• Vintage Air with Sanden compressor
• Tilt telescopic steering wheel
• Blaupunkt AM/FM/CD with amplifier
• Power disc brakes
• Power steering

The original LT-1 is long gone, replaced with a 350 V8 dressed with chrome accents and paired with chambered exhaust for a classic muscle car soundtrack. A 4-speed manual transmission keeps the driving experience authentic.

The seller describes the car as having excellent paint, interior, and drivability, noting it’s “ready for show or cruising.”

Custom hatchback C3s are pretty rare, and this one presents as a well-preserved example of a period correct custom build. The seller emphasizes the quality of the work and invites interested buyers to inspect and test drive the car.

  1. The owner says he’s run out of room? Truth is he probably couldn’t stand to look at the back end any more. It was probably in a hell of a wreck that necessitated a new front clip and a new rear end and after a few drinks, he said let’s make a hatchback out of it. And to think it was a LT1, sad.
