The good news is car thefts and attempted car thefts are down by a third in Memphis, Tennessee so far this year.
The bad news is the number for 2024 is still a whopping 6,711 (down from an even more disturbing 10,053 in 2023), including a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport coupe stolen from Memphis International Airport last Saturday, August 3.
The owner says he parked his Arctic White beauty on the fifth floor of the economy lot on July 31 but when he returned from a business trip five days later, the car that he had bought new for $80,000 in 2017 was gone.
Now “the (parking) spot has another vehicle in it and glass all around it,” said the owner, who did not want to be identified.
Surveillance video actually captured the theft as the Corvette is shown being driven out of the parking lot, but airport police say they can’t release the footage because it’s part of an ongoing investigation.
“I asked them for any video because the car is parked under a camera, and they said they couldn’t give me any copies of the videos unless I had a lawyer subpoena them,” the owner said in an interview with WREG-TV.
“I don’t know how they got the car out, but generally speaking, one of the investigators told me what they do is they have another car, and then they just follow the car out in front of them.”
The Corvette owner says he has been in Memphis for less than two years and has recently learned why some people are afraid to drive their nice cars around the city.
“People will drive the worst car they have to avoid it being stolen or having trouble with somebody while they’re out,” he explained. “What I’m finding out is that the airport is telling me this is not the first car that has been stolen off that deck.”
Glenn Thomas, the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications for Memphis International Airport, says he doesn’t know how many cars have been stolen there but the airport is taking steps to address the problem, including increased police and security presence and additional lighting and video cameras.
“We will continue to review our security efforts and make adjustments as needed,” Thomas added.
Little consolation for the owner of this stolen Corvette or the thousands of others affected by thefts this year. Police are asking the public to report information about the missing Corvette by calling MAPD at 901-922-0392 or CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.

Memphis must be a suburb of Chicago.
Ain’t payin’ no Uber, they’re a rip-off!
My GMC Sierra 1500 Denali stolen at Bush Airport. Gone 3 days. Stolen off top deck at B parking. Security told me I was # 8 that week. Nice trucks, Corvettes, anything Hellcat were the targets. Won’t park my new truck there anymore and would never, ever think of driving my 2014 Z51 to the airport.
DUDE – Call a friend for a ride, catch a train or trolley, walk to the nearest bus, or hitch hike to the airport BUT NEVER EVER leave a Corvette or any car you would like to continue driving at an economy parking lot at your airport, or a cheap hotel. It’s not worth the cost savings at $10 per day to have your favorite vehicle gone when you get back.
Good luck finding your Vette.
