[VIDEO] Some Corvettes Drowned While Others Carried On Like Submarines After Tropical Storm Hits Miami

Florida motorists would have been wise this weekend to remember the old adage: “Turn around, don’t drown” as Potential Tropical Cyclone One dumped more than a foot of rainfall in some areas as it marched across the southern tip of the state.

Twitter was abuzz with videos of the storm taken in Miami, including one that shows a silver C7 Corvette coupe making its way like a snowplow through a flooded street Friday night – and apparently making it through to the other side.

Another tweet, however, shows a red C7 coupe stopped and resting at an angle in stormwater almost up to the top of the front wheel and nearly to the top of the rear tire.

The mayhem wasn’t limited to just Corvette drivers, however, as former 10 Tampa Bay reporter Jonathan Petramala, now of Climate Productions LLC, captured a video of a young woman in the Brickell neighborhood forced to climb out of her sunroof before trying to push the car out of knee-deep water.

“Just an absolute disaster,” Petramala said. “I saw things I’d never seen before.”

The situation was so dire that the City of Miami even tweeted the following advisory: “To locate your stranded vehicle, call the @MiamiPD non-emergency number at 305-579-6111. Please have the make and model of the vehicle and the location where it was left.”

CBS Miami reported the downtown region was battling drainage problems caused by rising water levels in the river and bay, along with trash clogging pipes and backing up water.

The fire department sent out at least six high-water vehicles to respond to reports of people who needed to be rescued from their vehicles.

Cars weren’t the only victims of the storm, however, as FlightAware, an airline tracking company, said about a third of the 515 flights canceled across the U.S. in the last 24 hours were from Florida airports, including Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.

Some areas of southern Florida may get as much as 15 inches of rain by the time the storm exits, according to Bob Oravec, a senior branch forecaster with the U.S. Weather Prediction Center.

The storm is predicted to drift east across the Atlantic Ocean, passing just north of Bermuda by the beginning of the week.
