A suspected drunk driver in a Red Mist C8 Corvette coupe put on quite a show as he led police on a dangerous chase through San Diego on Saturday night.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the chase that featured reckless driving in the Corvette at speeds that reached 95 or 100 miles per hour.

The driver didn’t give up easily throughout the ordeal. At first, he refused to pull over about 9 p.m. when police suspected him of driving while intoxicated. Instead, he continued east on I-8 through the Mission Valley area before eventually exiting onto side streets in the College Area.

Even a spike strip successfully deployed by police on one of those streets failed to stop the Corvette, which kept going west and onto State Route 94. The driver finally crashed into an embankment near Euclid Avenue, but still refused to get out of the car despite being surrounded by at least 12 police vehicles. In fact, police say he just repeatedly revved up that 6.2-liter, 495-horsepower engine while waving his arms in and out of the car window.

About 10 minutes later, instead of opening the door, the man exited the vehicle by climbing out through the window, stumbling as he appeared to throw something at the Corvette. Reports say he then took some items from his pockets, looked into the car one more time (perhaps knowing it would be the last time for a while that he would be able to do so?), and then knelt on the ground, his back to the police with his hands on his head. Officers then were able to move in and place handcuffs on the man, leading him to the back of a waiting patrol SUV.

SR-94 reopened to traffic about 10:15 p.m.

  1. Off-topic a bit: We have had some of these stories where I live also – typically young(er) person crashes new C8. Question: Is this why the traditional corvette buyer (older, fatter demographic – like myself) is being crowded out? Is this why we have such enormous demand? Maybe not the only reason, but if the traditional buyer is being joined by lots of non-traditional buyers, that would increase demand, and coupled with fewer cars being made for all the reasons we know, would then increase the wait time. What do you think?
