All joking aside, driving a Corvette at 112 mph at night on a dark and lonely stretch of road isn’t very smart.
In fact, Albany County, Wyoming Sheriff Aaron Appelhans has a new term for it: “Deer Dodgeball.”
He couldn’t resist a light-hearted take on a very serious matter after one of his deputies clocked a Corvette doing 112 mph on Happy Jack Road between Cheyenne and Laramie.
In a recent Facebook post, the sheriff quipped: “That’s not driving — that’s playing deer dodgeball at 100+ MPH. Between the elk, deer, and raccoons holding midnight meetings, you’re basically speeding through a wildlife convention.
“Slower speeds mean fewer accidents, fewer tow trucks, and more critters staying off your hood. Pro tip: Deer don’t have headlights, but they do have terrible timing.”
The Corvette driver, who wasn’t identified by the sheriff’s office, earned a citation for speeding and a hefty fine for violating the highway’s posted speed limit of 65 mph.
He can at least take solace in the fact that he has plenty of company.
Retired lawman Frank Groth, who moved to Gillette after a career in California, tells Cowboy State Daily that he’s amazed by the number of speeders in his new home state of Wyoming.
“People often get behind the wheel of a car, and they think they are in a place they can control,” he said. “The primary factor (in crashes involving speeding) is driving too fast for existing conditions. They overestimate their own abilities. People get the feeling of entitlement.”
The stats back up Groth’s claim. According to a MoneySuperMarket study, Wyoming has the fastest drivers in the world, with an average speed of 71.8 mph on long drives, just ahead of New Mexico at 71 and Idaho at 70.5.
“Many of the less densely populated states rank among the fastest for long-distance driving due to lower congestion and it being possible to maintain higher speeds for long distances,” the study explains.

112mph? This is a joke, right? In Wyoming of all places. It’s a corvette! That is just above idle. The driver was probably doing 150 but slowed down to sip his coffee. Hope he has a better day.
