If you wanted real power in a C3 Corvette back in the day, you were nearing the end of the line by the time the 1970 Corvettes rolled out of the St. Louis factory.
This example currently being offered on craigslist out of Arizona is one of 4,473 to feature the most powerful LS5 454 V8 engine that year, with a whopping 390 horsepower.
The sellers have decided to let their vintage Stingray go, with an asking price of $33,000 or best offer.
If originality is your cup of tea, then you might want to look elsewhere. The car currently sports a black paint job, a color that wasn’t offered in ’70, and the black cloth seats are an aftermarket addition as well. On the other hand, if you happen to love black ’70s and don’t want to burn your behind on the usual black leather seats, then maybe you might like this cool drink of water in the hot desert after all.
Questions continue about the originality elsewhere, though, as the car is described as having a “reconditioned” 454 under the hood, with a “4 on the floor” to shift gears. No word on whether they are the matching-numbers units, however, but a quick inquiry should answer that question. On the bright side, literally, the engine does sport some added chrome on the valve covers, air cleaner, and alternator, though a new ignition shield will need to be sourced.
Two more bright spots are that the canvas top is said to be “in great shape” and the purchase includes a matching hardtop – which we always thought added a nice touch of formality to these cars.
Assuming the car has been out west for the majority of its life, then the frame and birdcage should be free of rust, also a good thing.

We’d never turn down a beautiful chrome-bumper C3, though the prices on these cars just continue to climb, don’t they? Was it really that long ago that no one really wanted a car like this and prices were tens of thousands of dollars cheaper?

This car might be good for a fun driver quality classic C3 but the seats that look like they were covered in fabric from a living room chair have to go.
