[VIDEO] Newly Delivered Corvette Z06 Suffers Engine Failure at 52 Miles

A new Corvette Z06 owner had the unfortunate experience of having to get his new car towed after it broke down while he was on the way home with just 52 miles on the odometer. He made a video discussing his problems that clocks in at a little under a half-hour.

The video opens with him at a California Chevrolet dealership where he takes delivery of his Black Corvette Z06, which he calls a Christmas present. Then it cuts to a dash display showing a check engine light with 52 miles on the odometer. He rants a bit about dealing with OnStar, who originally wanted to charge him for the tow, and he couldn’t tow the car that night back to the dealership because they lock down the gates after hours.

The owner says the car was making a rattling noise as he explained that he had the salesman in the car when the sound first became noticeable. He says that the salesman was kind enough to drive the owner’s C8 Stingray back to the owner’s construction yard 20 minutes away. Then the owner gave him a ride back to the dealership in the C8Z, and it was on his return trip home when the car became inoperable.

Once the tow truck arrives, we see the car on the flatbed, and then it’s dropped off at the owner’s construction yard. It’s then that the car is started by the owner’s “trusty mechanic,” and we get our first listen to the mechanical issue as we see smoke coming from the tailpipes.

The video cuts again back to the owner, who is now home, and he goes through his issues once again.

There are some questions regarding this screenshot showing his Trip 1 odometer with 52.4 miles, an average speed of 18.7 MPH, and an average fuel economy of just 8.5 MPG. We’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on whether or not the car revved hard during that drive back and forth to the dealership. Chevy will know that once they do their diagnostic work on it, and hopefully, this will be easily explainable.

The owner wraps up his talk by saying he doesn’t want to bash Chevrolet for this experience either, but that he’s done with this new Z06, and he plans to go back to his original plan of supercharging his Stingray.

We’ll be watching his YouTube channel to see if there are any updates.

  1. Regardless of the testing and testing and testing…new engine designs are bound to have teething issues…The 2014 Porsche GT3 engine was a major issue for the company, but they eventually made it right for their customers. AND…It didn’t stop customers from buying GT3s…
Several LT6 engine failures out of the eventual thousands, statically would be considered acceptable. However, dozens of failures would indicate an engineering or manufacturing failure.
We know Chevrolet will have this failed LT6 with the engineering team asap! Until then, I’m not making an uninformed guesses what occurred.
I’ve been told by those longer in the tooth than I, that’s with new engines it’s best not to be the first to have one… In this case based on where I’m at with my Dealership…there’s no chance of me being in the top group to receive a 23 Z06.
    Although, I’m staying tuned in…😉

  2. I hope all you mid engine lovers enjoy them.I will stick with my front engine stingray…..

  3. I’m surprised that this did not occur during the testing of this engine. I wonder what the builder has to say…a certain someone on Youtube is going to love this and be posting about it as he is the conspiracy theorist concerning the LT6/Z06.

  4. i tole fernando to put oil IN the car.
he also left a WRENCH in the block.
52 miles, he probably needs new tires too!

  5. Hmmmm…this sounds a bit strange. Picking up the car at night? Phone not charged? Not sure the name of the dealer? Was the car started from cold properly? Battery ok? It’s probably something simple. Like the humminfafer boporplaygon or something.

  6. You folks that continue to purchase this Z 06 and the new C 8 period are VERY FOOLISH , as you keep being taken advantage of by General Motors. They are GROSSLY OVERPRICED but yet they continue to be sold for much over MSRP. When will you learn not to taken advantage of ❓

  7. Vette Titian has said that this new engine needs warm up due to the race car type clearances to get oil to the bearings and heat up the oil to correct viscosity.

  8. I never buy the first year of an all new vehicle or the first year of an all new sub model. I like to wait at least a year and hope they get the bugs worked out of them.

  9. Damn what a friggen bum deal. Shit happens, all will be great. Still take a C8Z or just a C8 or C7, C6, C5, etc over any Stang:) Lol, it’s new people I think they call it growing pains or working the bugs out. Sucks to have to go through it though. I do know a guy that his wife has a Scat Pack Challenger a year or two old, he told me it’s had issues since brand new. In the shop a lot and it’s a tank. He hates that car lol. I guess she has about had it too and wants one like his, I asked what he drove he smiled said “A C5 Corvette”.

  10. Not funny at all. Not sure why anybody would pay $50k OVER STICKER for any car, but that’s beside the point here, only 52 miles this should not be happening, especially for a $130k car. I’m currently on a C8 ZO6 list, but I’m having second thoughts because of what I’m seeing so far with some of them already in private hands. I currently have a 2019 C7 ZO6 manual trans, never an issue with it, including several track days, and I ordered it for a few thousand under sticker, the C8 ZO6 list I’m on the dealer will sell to me for sticker, no markup, which is the way it should be. But this dealer, “normal smells and sounds for a new car”, total BS, and he spent $180k?? WTF?? Hopefully this turns out well, but this isn’t a very good start.

  11. Do you suppose they will replace the engine or the car. With the C1’s and C2’s if its not the original engine it hurts the valve.

  12. Of course he has a youtube channel, don’t all these people getting the 1st ones of these cars have one, sure seems like it…SMH

  13. Yo, Shelby Super Snake, there are a lot of dealers selling the C-8’s at sticker, not everyone is foolish enough to pay those markups

  14. I hope it will turn out to be just an anomaly. Every once in a blue moon a new car will fail quickly after driven off the dealer’s lot. One other new owner had a oil pan gasket leak, which is quite minor. But there are not enough of these Zs out in the wild yet to create enough data on reliability. I’m sure GM tested these cars to the hilt with abuse before determining they had a good build model. I must say though, I’m from the old school “wait until they get the bugs worked out” camp.

  15. Why didn’t he call OnStar from the car? Very dangerous to walk away on a CA freeway. The Z06’s lights were flashing so it had EL power. Alos he could have charged the phone in the car. It’s his second C8 so he should have known that. Ciocca Corvettes block entry to its lot but few other Chevy dealers do. Would think in LA easy to find a dealer not locked down. No sure I believe his full story.

  16. Not to compare his experience with the Z06 engine vs C8 engine. But what he discribed was similar to a situation I had driving home from the dealer after picking up the 22 C8. Engine shut off, there was a smell, the oil pressure was 0 with the red light and check engine light came on. Similar issues with onstar, but they never picked up. After 15 minutes of sitting, tried starting the car. I started, had oil pressure but check light still on. Pulled to safe spot and waited for tow truck. With no front lift could not get it up on the ramp. So drove slowing with tow truck behind to local dealer. Next day they checked it out, not check engine light and could not find anything wrong. 2000 miles later, engine threw a rod…

  17. IDK why everyone has such a hard on for nitpicking the guys story. Who cares? The car has 52 miles on it, it shouldn’t have had a catastrophic engine failure regardless of how it was treated. The redline is limited by the ECU in the Z just like it is in the C8. There’s nothing Cholo the neck tattoo should have been able to do to hurt that car other than wreck it.
