Corvettes of the mid-1970s hold a special place in my heart because I was coming of age then. This 1974 coupe represents the first year of the federally mandated polyurethane bumpers, and the Dark Brown Metallic paint instantly transports me back to the days of high school, shag carpet and bell bottoms.
This 1974 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray being offered on Craigslist is a low mile, garage kept survivor that combines period correct presentation with plenty of mechanical upgrades. Finished in Code 68 Dark Brown Metallic, the car retains its original paint, factory T tops, and under 28,000 documented miles. The color itself is a time capsule—one of those unmistakably ’70s shades that vanished from automotive palettes by the end of the decade, but still carries a warm, nostalgic glow.
Mechanically, the car was ordered new with the LS4 454 and a four speed manual, it changed hands in 1976 when the original owner sold it to his brother. Finding the LS4 underpowered, the brother sourced and installed a factory LS5 big block, unlocking 425 horsepower and restoring the C3’s early era brutality. Recent work includes a front suspension rebuild, a new HEI distributor with fresh plugs and wires, a rebuilt carburetor, new power steering components, and refreshed transmission and differential fluids. The seller describes the car as turnkey, with no current mechanical issues.
Inside, the Saddle leather cabin has been updated with new seat covers and foam , along with new carpet with sound deadening and heat shielding. A retro Custom Autosound Bluetooth stereo and sound bar add modern convenience with period styling. The tilt/telescopic wheel remains the only notable factory option, and although the A/C system is complete, it is currently inoperative. I’ve never understood why someone spends so much time improving a car and leaves the A/C for someone else to worry about.
The exterior presents exceptionally well for a survivor. The original Dark Brown Metallic paint still has a deep shine, and the fiberglass shows no visible cracking or repair. The first year urethane bumpers fit cleanly, giving the taillights a subtly recessed, almost “frenched” look. Rally wheels and bright trim appear well preserved, and there are no signs of frame or birdcage rust.
With an asking price of $24,000, this Stingray stands out as a competitively priced, well documented C3 that offers both originality and enhanced big block performance. Now if I could just find my old bell bottoms…
