As one of two engine providers to the IndyCar series and the only domestic supplier, Chevrolet certainly went all out for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix last week in Washington D.C. We previously noted how the Corvette was everywhere in the nation’s capital from being the official pace car while a fleet of Corvette C8s provided hot laps around the 1.7-mile track to media and VIPs prior to the race.
But the crowning achievement was watching the FOX Sports pre-race show which featuring the Corvette Grand Sport getting delivered to the track with each branch of our military providing logistics, transportation, and security on its journey.
Yesterday, General Motors posted an article from Chris Perkins of GM News about Operation Freedom 250 and if you want an insiders account of the Chevrolet’s weekend activities, it’d definitely worth your time to read.
Corvette enthusiasts would love to see a behind the scenes “making of” this video, and we got a glimpse of what that might look like in this post on X.com that shows the moment the Marine’s Super Stallion helicopter swoops in and picks up the Grand Sport that’s suspended on a platform under it. The video shows members of the military hooking up the platform to the helicopter which is hovering just feet above their heads. It’s an incredible shot!
This would have been super cool to see in person I’d lose it!! I geek out on this stuff.

In the article from GM, we learn that Corvette Lead Development Engineer Charlie Rusher was tasked to drive the Grand Sport in each of these handoffs from one branch to the other. “I’ve gotten to do a lot of cool things for work,” Rusher tells GM News, “but nothing like this.”
As we stated earlier, seeing the Corvette in action with our men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces was another special moment to happen during the year-long celebration of America’s 250 anniversary.
