[VIDEO] Throttle House Tests the C8 Corvette Z06 with the Ford GT

Here at CorvetteBlogger, it’s our job to keep our passionate readership abreast on all things plastic and fantastic. Quite often, especially in the age of the C8, that means gritting our teeth and dedicating posts to people that we don’t necessarily believe add any value to – and even act as an active detriment to – the mythology of the Crossed Flags. But, there are a few creators out there who are a genuine pleasure to cover. The latter group is personified by the guys at Throttle House, and they’ve really outdone themselves this time!

After spending 14 years looking up at the crude, upstart Viper in both brute strength and raw performance, the Corvette team decided it was time to get serious about reclaiming the domestic sports car throne with the release of the next level C6 Z06 in 2006. Over the 11 years that followed, ever-more-potent Z-badged models pushed the hardcore snake to the point of redundancy, causing Dodge to send their loveable madman out to pasture in 2017. Since then, Chevrolet’s halo car has been lonely atop the American performance car food chain. That is, if you don’t count an obscure Ford that hit the scene just as the Viper was taking its final bow.

We are, of course, referring to the second modern road-going rendition of every Blue Oval fan’s favorite bedtime story of their company going toe-to-toe with Ferrari at Le Mans in the ‘60s. The current GT is a Carbon-Fiber wonder assembled in limited numbers for Ford by Multimatic (the people that make the trick DSSV shocks seen in Formula 1 and the Camaro ZL1 1LE) in Ontario, Canada. It uses an “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 mounted behind the driver, and, since undergoing a minor 2020 upgrade, it makes 660 horsepower to go with 550 lb-ft of torque. It only weighs a touch over 3,000 lbs., starts around $500,000 (if Ford deems you worthy of buying one new) and it’s 1500-unit run is coming to an end after some brief production overlap with the latest and greatest Z06, which is where the TH guys come into the story.

Now, since high-profile collectors tend to keep each small batch of GTs spoken for, Ford hasn’t bothered to keep much of a press fleet for their exotic. But Throttle House was able to get ahold of a privately-owned unit to test alongside Chevy’s acclaimed new Ferrari-by-way-of Kentucky, and you all need to watch to find out how the best cars ever produced on this continent stack up against one another! We will warn you though, prepare for a pinch of disappointment because, even though they have both cars at Willow Springs with a 458 Speciale in tow, we still don’t get to see any lap times! The video is still a must-watch, but here’s hoping that a worthwhile source will eventually deliver the three-way showdown for big-three bragging rights that we all want to see between the Viper’s ACR-E swansong, the C8 Z06, and the scarce and enigmatic Ford that bridged their on-sale dates!

  1. The Gt is damn nice but very limited on who even gets one, way over priced and the Vette sounds better. The Italian hot rod is completely impractical and not a daily driver, don’t think the Gt is either. The Vette can be serviced at any Chevy dealer, be driven daily, sounds killer and way, way cheaper. I bet the Vette does better MPG wise too. Now this would be a very different story if the Vette was blown or turbocharged. The Vette is still the best bang for the buck. I’ll take a Red Mist one please.

  2. The Ford GT is an awesome car, no doubt, but, that color, why would you make such a cool looking car and put, what looks like a color you would paint your front porch ont in the country, on it. Kudo’s to the Corvette a fraction of the price compared to the Ford and not too far back in performance, the weight was the factor there.

  3. One of the best videos yet of the Z06. I’m a road racer and while 0-60 is cool the only real racing in on a Road Course. I’d love to see a lap time comparison. These guys touch on the target market a little, GM has to build a car the is every man’s super car and sell 10,000 a year. Super Cudos to GM for the balls to build such a car!!

  4. The Z06 weight issue is only 1/3 of handycap against the GT. The latter has an engine with 100 F-LBS more torque and aerodynamics thats puts the Z06 to shame. How can these two cars have 30 mph top speed difference with same HP engines…. really?. I love the LT6 for what it is compared to the ecoboost V6. The LT6 should be transplanted in a proper racebody/chassy design such as the 2015 Corvette Daytona Prototype. Weighing at 2300 lbs, it can be converted to road use with 300 lbs of essentials while keeping the integrated roll cage.

  5. The Z06 is built for a completely different audience, at a totally different scale, with a very different set of goals, which is why it’s as heavy as it is. The GT was built only as a track car, and both it and the 458 are built to sell to people with a lot of disposable income. The Z06 has constraints on it to make it (more) affordable and much more attainable than the GT, while selling to consumers that are likely to want to daily drive it. Considering the different targets, the Z06 is still impressive for what it does and the way it does it.

That said, I would love to see GM release a true racing corvette, with exceptional weight reduction that would blow both of these cars away, performance-wise. This would likely be a challenge from a production standpoint, so I can understand why GM doesn’t do it.
