Three Examples of Dealers Behaving Badly with their 2023 Corvette Z06 Allocations

Now that ordering for the 2023 Corvette Z06 has officially opened, we wanted to take a moment to thank all those dealers working hard to bring us the car. Some great dealers are selling America’s newest sports car at MSRP and in today’s sales environment, each and every one of them is a Godsend.

GM North American President Steve Carlisle issued a warning letter back in January that addressed the launch of in-demand vehicles. In that letter, he says that a small number of dealers have engaged in practices that put the collective interests of GM and its dealers at risk and it generates negative press that reflect poorly on GM’s brands and dealerships. Examples in the letter included demanding deposits far and above GM’s program rules or paying sums far in excess of MSRP to purchase or lease a vehicle.

If GM North American President Steve Carlisle ever needed some examples of dealers behaving badly with their Z06 customers, we have the receipts!

Mac Haik Chevrolet – Houston, Texas

We heard that Mac Haik Chevrolet in Houston, Texas was one of the dealers who received a Z06/Z07 allocation last Thursday.

Today, their Z06 Non-Refundable Deposit Policy was leaked to the internet showing a requirement of a non-refundable $6,000 deposit which will be applied to the cost of the car as a down payment along with an adjusted dealer markup (ADM) of $90,000.

They will probably get that figure as well…Unless you say no to rewarding this kind of behavior.

Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land – Sugar Land, Texas (Houston)

Demand is so hot for the 2023 Corvette Z06 that dealers are double-dipping with multiple ADMs on the same car. Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land in Houston held an auction over the weekend for a chance to win an allocation. The winner for the allocation spot will also be expected to purchase the Corvette with an undisclosed adjusted dealer markup.

A Corvette Forum member posted this graphic below following the auction’s close. He said the $1M offer came in after the auction closed during the final bidding and was most likely a scam. Imagine the disappointment at Classic over that!

Rydell Chevrolet – Los Angeles, California

One of our readers purchased a 2020 Corvette Stingray from Rydell in early 2020 and put himself on their Z06 list. After three years, he is told that the ADM is $100,000! Then he receives this letter saying that Rydell will be ordering their first Corvettes as Dealer Stock Units that will be auctioned on eBay. Once they go through those initial Dealer Stock orders (9-10 total cars), they will start the Customer Sold Orders. They also ask for a $10,000 deposit and even admit that it’s double their highest allowed deposits.

These examples are, unfortunately, just some of the tactics that dealers are using to squeeze Corvette enthusiasts for all they can. We keep hearing about how Chevrolet dealers are independent businesses and there is not much they can do. However, these dealership practices are painting Chevrolet in a negative light, and time and again, we’ve heard people are sick of it and moving on.

UPDATE
Holy Shizzle! Just got the word that Mac Haik Chevrolet has reversed course and will be offering all Corvette Z06s at MSRP! I heard the news and then found this screenshot on FB. I also confirmed that Josh Potts is the GM at the dealership. Let’s hope this came from pressure applied by General Motors as well as the public outcry with this letter going viral on the forums, Facebook, and our blog:

  1. I believe there are many dealers that will be sticking to the MSRP. I think there are three in Michigan. One is my sponsor, Matick Chevrolet in Redford, Michigan. Alan Johnson is my contact. It may be a good service for people to spread the word about the good guys. We have a good guy list of hotels in Bowling Green for when we do the Corvette Caravan. It saves a lot of headaches. Larry Courtney. [email protected] 2024 Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky Corvette Caravan. The third time.

  2. At this point, I imagine that the waiting lists exceed the production run of the C8 generation, for the Z06. I also imagine that the greedy dealers far exceed the honest(ish) dealers. How many of the Top 25 dealers are charging in excess of MSRP? I’d love to know. I’ve read that the closest volume Corvette dealer to me (Coughlin in Pataskala, OH) is charging over MSRP (an undisclosed amount). The days of Corvette being an aspirational car for the common man are OVER!! Now, it’s a play thing for the rich, and YouTube a-holes.

  3. Initially, it seem that GM’s North American President, Steve Carlisle, warning letter did not yield the intended results. However, before passing judgment, I’ll see how this story actually plays out…
That said, if I was a betting man, my money is on that Chevrolet Dealerships will continue to charge what they believe buyers are willing to pay over MSRP. Like it or not, no one really “needs” or is “assured” a new Z06 at MSRP and buyers are free to pay the dealership’s asking price or move on to another choice. Previous or even some new Chevrolet customers may not be accustomed of paying these ultra high ADMs. Although, for some time now those that have been buying the high-end Porsche’s, Ferrari’s or other exotics… it’s the price they’re accustomed to paying in order to own the manufacturer’s latest and greatest models. The new Chevrolet Z06 has definitely attracted the attention of high net worth buyers and the dealerships are very much aware. No judgment on my part…and as frustrating as it may be, the fact is we live in a capitalistic society where in the case of the Z06, supply and demand is a huge factor. Due to the projected Z06’s 10% of 2023 C8 production numbers, does GM have some level of culpability? Have they exasperated the issue? I just don’t know…and in the end, it doesn’t matter to me personally. However, I’d be really surprised to observe any GM actions to restrict dealerships from charging over MSRP, regardless of the amount. We’ll see…

  4. What a shame that the Chevy dealers will act in such manner. We all knew that some will always take advantage of the situation. With the cost of everything going up, it only seem the dealers will do the same. I called my local Chevy dealer, Jenkins of Venice, FL and asked how I would go about ordering a new Stringray. I wanted to know what the cost would be, salesperson (who I will not name, due to the fact this pricing is dealer mandated) stated they are selling at $30,000 over MSRP. (does not include dealer prep, paperwork prep, or MV prep). I informed that I would go elsewhere and I will never purchase an another vehicle from them. Why doesn’t Chevrolet stop this type of conduct?

  5. Rydell…let me see, they want $100,000 over MSRP for those cars that will be ordered by those on the waiting list. However before that the first 9 or 10 will be ordered by the dealer as they feel is “desirable” and those few will be sold by auction through Ebay. Will that auction start at $100,000 over MSRP or will it be what the market brings over MSRP. If the latter, I suspect they will be lucky to get near $100,000 for any of them. In that even, what following customer who wants to order one (if any are left who have not dropped out) who will feel it fair to pay that $100,000 over if the Ebay auction was unable to bring that? When I called Rydell last December, they said that Stingrays were $5000 over but the Z06 would be more but could not say how much. I passed.

  6. I have been told I can not sell my C8 for 12 months or the dealer will charge me $20,000.00 has anybody heard of this, can they really inforce this?

  7. When Steve Wynn, the billionaire Las Vegas hotel/casino owner, flipped a La Ferrari model for millions over list price, going specifically against Ferrari’s written dealer covenant…..Ferrari REVOKED his dealership!

That’s how an iconic brand behaves.

You will never see wimpy Steve Carlisle do anything similar.

Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, etc. CONTROL THEIR DEALERS. GM’s dealers conversely CONTROL THEM!

  8. I realize when all is said and done a Chevy dealer walks a tight line to stay solvent. Competition is cutthroat and margins are slim in our troubled times. Notwithstanding, the management of these three dealers have instituted sale policies that will most likely (I hope) come back to haunt them. Because their demand for $100,000 over MSRP is so beyond the pale and contrary to GM’s desires, I have to suspect each of them is otherwise in poor financial condition and is desperately seeking a big pay day.

  9. Chevy will not do nothing they will just look the other way…..they are doing that all ready with just the C8 sting ray.My dealer is still doing it and they do nothing to them.I SEE CORVETTE CONTI HAS MADE THE LIST…NOT SO MUCH A CORVETTE GUY AFTER ALL

  10. Having just read all these comments about the ZO6, I’d like to offer my experience with an honest dealer for a nonZ06 2023 Stingray just delivered this week. The dealer is Rio Vista Chevrolet in Buellton CA and my price was MSRP. They also got me reasonably rapid delivery.

  11. AS A CHEVY DEALER FOR OVER 30 YEARS I WOULD SAY THIS
EVERYONE WHO PAID MSRP FOR EVERY CAR THEY EVER BOUGHT
SHOULD GET A Z06 FOR MSRP

MSRP IS OK FOR A Z06 BUT NOT OK FOR CAMARO OR A MALIBU?

  12. I have been on “The List” for about 18 months now, this dealer has been getting in C8’s with only a few miles on them and calling them “USED” just to get around the markup constraints.

  13. Sadly, No reasonable exemption for customers who sell their Z06 early for medical or financial issues, and get their warranty crushed, but if a dealership wants to twist arms, ha, no problem, GM looks the other way. Inconsistent, hypocritical, and unfair.

  14. GM threatens the buyers (flippers) but not the predatory dealerships. Do as I say and not as I do. People are also quickly getting tired of this BS of over promising and under delivering. It’s like they’ve shot their wads before they’ve even whipped it out.

  15. Little new to see here. When the 1979 Indy Pace Car replicas come out, even Wall Street articles helped drive the price up and soon production was increased so that each of Chevy’s then 6000 plus dealers got one. Our small NE MS dealership (family owned and long gone today) even got involved in a bidding war over MSRP. Many of these are still hidden away waiting on that gigantic future payday that never came. What does gm care anyway as they are building us all an ev soon, whether we need/want it or not.

  16. Latest news , if GM has a 30,000 C-8 number for production in 2023
and told 10% will be Z06 platform, around 4000 GM dealerships in the U.S.
you do the math, i have been waiting 28 months for my Z06 with a low
allocation # and i doubt my dealer will deliver.. does not look promising.

  17. I bet the people that have waited patiently for the last 2 to 3 years on the Classic Chevrolet list are mad as hell, and rightly so. To have waited all that time, building up the excitement, getting ready to order and some rich guy “cuts” in line in front of you. What an insult and disappointment. GM and Classic Chevrolet that is disgusting and unethical. You made $71,000.00 from the auction, but you will lose a lot more than that in customer loyalty over the next few years.

  18. CIOCCA CORVETTE MSRP ALL DAY LONG. I bought my C8 at MSRP. from start to delivery in SO CA Took 1 yr. All transactions and paperwork was handled online, SO EASY! Z06? MSRP! Patience ? Yes

  19. When the C6 Z06 came out in 2006 most dealers were marking them up $20K. By 2008 you could buy one for under MSRP especially if one happened to be in stock. I got mine late ’07 for $10K off MSRP. You will probably never find a C8 Z06 in stock without a huge ADM and while I hate the fact, why shouldn’t they sell for the most people are willing to pay? Any thing less is just leaving money on the table. What I wonder is why GM isn’t getting more for these high demand cars?

  20. I will not pay $1 over msrp, if it is they can keep it. If anyone is going to Carlisle this weekend let the GM people know how you feel about the dealer mark-ups going on. The Z06 looks like an awesome car, but not worth the price with the inflated msrp and dealer markup.

  21. Probably solve a lot of this bs if GM would get it’s shit together and just start building them, all of them. This is a piss poor way to do business. I’m kinda glad I can’t afford a C8.

  22. Both Bridgewater Chev and Green Brook Chevy NJ have told me $100,000 over MSRP for their Z06s. And a friend in Harrisburg PA area told me of a local dealership having a sealed auction for here first allocation. I think there are far more dealerships over charging that we have fingers and toes. Patriot Chevy in Limrick was asking $30K over for a base C8 so I can only guess what they want for a Z06.

  23. I am currently on 2 C8 ZO6 lists, both dealers said they will order at MSRP. That being said, I’ve bought a LOT of new vehicles, and have never paid MSRP for any of them, but given the situation and popularity of the C8 ZO6 I will reluctantly do so, but I’ll NEVER pay anything over MSRP for any vehicle. I currently own a 2019 ZO6/ZO7 3LZ with 7 speed manual, which is quickly becoming a very desirable car, and I ordered it for well below MSRP. These dealers charging these insane ADM’s should have all their Corvette allocations cancelled by GM.

  24. Back in may 2020 I put a $1000 deposit with Bachman Chevrolet because their sale rep, “Chevy Dude’ was all over YouTube saying that they never charge over MSRP. When Chevrolet announced the Z06 would be manufactured they immediately changed their website from msrp pricing to ‘market price’. Was just informed that the market price is 50K over msrp. No thank you. I’m over this car and GM. I’ll never buy one of their products ever again.

  25. DO SOME RESEARCH AND GET ON THE LIST AT MSRP
THE CORVETTE FORUM HAS A LIST
GO TO ANOTHER STATE IF NECESSARY

WHEN THE ZR1 IS REVEALED, Z06 PRICES WILL DROP
COLLECTORS WILL ALSO WANT AN E-RAY AND THE ZORA

  26. It’s a club that you ain’t in. Blame the Fed for all the excess dollars floating around. Just waiting for the debt time bomb to explode. Watch the 10 year yield and see how the scam stock market reacts.

  27. I got a call from the dealership today telling me they lowered the price to MSRP on the 2023 C8 Z06. I asked can they get me a spot allocated in the first orders like i would have received back then when I was told $25,000 over MSRP up front and not refundable. The answer was no they are all gone now. Now not only am I not buying the Z06 from them they have lost all my business buy my personal vehicles and my business vehicles which I have bought 2 in the last 6 months.
I applaud General Motors for looking out for their customers. I can not say the same thing for Chevrolet, I contacted them when this went down and their response was they didn’t see a problem with it.

  28. After 2 years of being on the “Z06 list” and buying a 3LT Stingray from James Wood Chevrolet in Denton TX they informed me i would need to pay an additional $50,000 for the right to order a Z06 through their dealership. Having bought many GM products since 1985 my loyalty to the Chevrolet brand is definitely weakened. GM needs to do more than just talk tough.

  29. Just picked up a C8 70 Anniversary edition. MSRP. Hard to pay full MSRP but its my choice not the dealers choice. in our society if one can buy under MSRP, they do. If the dealer can sell over MSRP ?? why not? Sure no one likes it but is still mine and you choice. Get mad don’t ever buy from them again blah blah blah our entire country is based on the supply and demand principal. honestly I am glad some dealers are charging over MSRP, instead of GM moving the price to the $50K over MSRP ‘market price’. If GM does, everyone pays more. This way the dealers who sell out now will go the way of the Harley dealers of the late 90s. The buyers will go where they are comfortable. Want one now and have $100K over, you get one. Wait and pay MSRP great we have a dealer for you too!! I guess what I am trying to say is two fold 1.) The over MSRP keeps the used market nice for the current owners, and 2.) we aren’t talking about bread (food). That would be a crime and another discussion itself. Keep wavin’!

  30. The dealer I found told me I am probably looking at 2 to 3 years before I will get my car

  31. Only General Motors can stop this. I had contacted Chevrolet in the beginning and the flat did not care.

  32. Yet a customer can resale the vehicle for $100k more and that’s ok to everyone in this forum! Laughable. The warranty void is minor to someone buying to collect the vehicle so there is really no repercussions for the flipper. Wondering when the housing market went up the last few years if you said oh well my house is worth 700k on the open market but I paid 400k for it so I’ll only sell it for 400k? Or my C8 I’m trading on this Z06 is really only worth 60k in a normal market, so instead of the dealer giving me 90k or market value I’ll just tale the 60k! Oh when Corvettes 3 years ago could be found for 15k to 20k below MSRP did you tell the dealer I don’t think that’s “fair” I’ll give you MSRP?? 🤣

  33. GM can stop it anytime they want, revoke all future allocations to offending dealers. I’ve yet to see GM publicly punish dealers who do it, they’ve only threatened it.

If you want to stop the flippers, cut the warranty off. I’m fine with that. They’ve said they’ll do that, and it may work somewhat. People who can afford the markup will not bat much eye though. Just do what Ford did to the new GT40 buyers and put a ban on resale a couple years.

Look you want to stick a markup, fine, 3-5K. Tell me before I put my name down on your list, don’t come up with one to make your business numbers work out after the fact. You get to 100K? Non refundable deposits? GTFO here. You don’t deserve the allocation.

Personally I will only go to Ciocca/MacMulkin for any vette purchase. It was absolutely painless to buy from MacMulkin. I bought a different car locally and it was complete pain and incompetent salespeople. MacMulkin was bam, done.

  34. The general manager at Mac Haik is now going back on dropping the price. Charging above msrp again.

  35. Now I’m told nothing is set for sure yet. I will update here when I hear more. My car is reserved there

  36. Mark. The dealers that do the markup will be around later if they can withstand a couple years of less sales. I will not buy another car from the dealer and it is one of the ones listed. I have al 2 business and buy 2 to 4 vehicles a year.
They have burned bridges with many customers I know and they are many more that will never buy there again. The loss of sales will hurt and for the few amount of allocations they had its a big loss of other sales

  37. Our economy is built on capitalism. For good or bad, I am not going to argue that point here. If someone is willing to pay $200,000 plus for a Z06, so be it. These dealerships are in business to make money. Why should they be forced to sell a product under market value? Why is it ok for someone to buy a Z06 at MSRP then turn around and sell it for a $100,000 profit? And this person has no overhead, no employees, and no business or economic risk. Chevrolet/GM built a fantastic product. That should be applauded. They are building as many Corvettes as they can. That should be applauded. But to beat GM up because they built a product that is so desirable that people are willing to pay crazy money for, is insane. Everyone crying foul would do exactly the same thing if they had a vehicle that someone was willing to pay them a huge profit for. Perhaps GM should require their dealerships to bid on new Corvette allocations and use the excess profits to pay back all that government money they received from their bailout. And if GM is going to restrict the price dealers can sell a car, then it’s fair for the dealers to restrict the selling options of those buyers. There is no easy answer or simple solution. Life is not fair and not everyone is entitled to own a Corvette at MSRP.

  38. The question of why it is OK for a person to be able to buy a car and then turn around and sell it for massive profit is supply and demand. an individual must be lucky enough to be one of the first to buy the car from a dealership. But it’s not OK for a dealership to mark the price up 100K over MSRP because the dealership gets allocated the car from GM and the huge ADM fee collected doesn’t go back to GM, it stays with the greedy dealership. If all dealers did this and charged outrageous ADM, that would limit the number of Z06 sold and this hurts GMs bottom line. That’s not good and reflects negatively on GM.

  39. That’s capitalism my friends. I agree with Sal. I simply decided to stay with my 19 Z06. It has provided miles of smiles. As much as I would like a C8 Z06 I’ll just wait for a few years and go from there. I’m a sucker for Corvettes, but I’m not stupid.

  40. To me it’s not really the price, MSRP or not, that is the issue. It’s the shenanigans, the cutting in line, the ridiculous markups. I won’t deal with a dealership that’s trying to scam me into choosing a monthly payment vs. outright quoting me a price, so I’m certainly not going to deal with a dealership that can’t honor its word.

Some (few) people will pay outrageous premiums to be first, whether they really can afford it or not. Those people will get their Z06’s sooner than the rest of us. But the ones who showed a clear disdain for their customers in this will be making a quick buck at the cost of any customer loyalty.

To be honest, I’ve lost most of my interest in the Z06 because of this. I’m (supposedly) 17th on a list, but I kinda just don’t care right now.

  41. I am number 2 on James Wood Denton,Texas list for a new Z06.Bought 2 Corvettes from them but now I can have the pleasure buying one for 50,000 over msrp. This sucks.!!

  42. I wouldn’t pay one dollar over MSRP. GM should really feel stupid having dealers make more money per vehicle than they do by manufacturing probably ten of them. GM could easily put a stop to this STEALING if they really had concern for it’s customers. Buyers can also aid in stopping this by simply not buying from dealers like Mac Haik in Houston. I personally will never buy anything, no matter what make, from any business under their name. Thieving bastards!

  43. I am in the same boat as Muzzer Fuzzer. I was lured to Bachman Chevy (Louisville, KY) OVER 3 YEARS AGO by Chevy Dude promising MSRP as compared with my local dealer requiring “market price” to get on their list. Fast forward 3+ years later and once my Z06 order hits 1100 status Bachman reveals they will require +$50,000 ADM. Capitalism is one thing…anti-competitive practices / false advertising is completely another. I’m not paying Lambo / McLaren prices for a Chevy and I suspect most others aren’t either. I filed complaints with GM / Chevy Concierge and emailed Steve Carlisle directly but it has been crickets for over a week and I feel pretty certain I will never get a response. This was GM’s one shot at gaining me as a potential lifetime customer. Unfortunately Bachman’s greed f’d it up for them so I will be spending that money on a car that is actually worth over $200k rather than getting screwed by a lying, greedy, slimeball dealer. Good luck GM. You are losing thousands of sales over greedy dealer practices and will never get these customers back. Your dealers will regret it too once when the C8 / Z06 buzz dies down and they are back to hawking Malibus.

I am not interested in paying 30k over msrp, nor will I ever buy a car from your dealership group. This is why people hate dealers, you’re causing your own demise.
