When it comes to unprecedented demand for the 2023 Corvette Z06, some dealers are handling it better than others.

A few months ago we shared a letter from GM’s Steve Carlisle who suggested that dealers would be put on notice when it comes to the shady dealings of these in-demand vehicles. Despite plenty of evidence of price gouging and other shady schemes like having to make charitable donations before being approved to buy a Z06, we are continually told that dealers are independent businesses that can price their vehicles at whatever price they want.

Sadly, Corvette buyers are having to accept that fact with little recourse available other than an occasional public shaming, which again doesn’t seem to be deterring dealers from asking six figures over the price of a car. Keep in mind that these decisions are being made by the owners/management and their salespeople are left blowing in the wind as they attempt to go back to those who have been “on a list” and give them the bad news that lists mean nothing and their dream car was just priced out of their reach.

It’s a pretty crappy situation all the way around and even I am having trouble keeping the outrage meter on high. These days, the thought of a Chevrolet dealer charging $100,000 over MSRP is met with a shrug. If public shaming is our only recourse for dealers charging ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS over MSRP, then let me fire up my megaphone and turn the BLAST meter up to 11 because the “family” dealership like this one in our own home market deserves to be blasted.

It doesn’t have to be like this, but telling a dealer to “f**k off” is a hell of a lot easier when they just priced you out of the market for their own greed. For long-standing customers of dealerships like Dimmitt Chevrolet of Clearwater, I would suggest taking ALL of your car-buying business elsewhere…and never go back. There are over 3,000 Chevrolet dealers in the country. It’s time to reconsider past relationships and buy vehicles from those dealers that want your business, not just your money.

FYI, there is a new website out there that has been charting markups at dealerships and Dimmitt Chevrolet’s $100,000 over is currently the highest markup we’ve seen (so far) among Chevrolet dealers selling the Z06.

  1. Mary Barr should make all the dealer gouging customer for an extra 100k into users car dealers or call the greedy owner to a designated Location and run then all over with the new Electric Hummer to make a lasting impression that GM doesn’t want to be represented buy Dealer that openly intend to Cheat GM Customers. The Dealer Can’t make a single GM Vehicle and should add a cent to the MSRP.

  2. Van Chevy in Scottsdale 50k over MSRP and $6540 4 dealer prep. I am #1 on their list 4 2 years now. that sucks they are the 13 largest dealer in the USA.

  3. I had this happen to me when I order the first Ford GT at Klemment in Texas. They got the allocation then the owner called to announce a “premium” over our agreement of MSRP.

  4. Just my opinion all of these dealers asking 50-100K over are going to have very short or no lists. As crazy as this might sound I think you will see a lot of dealers with ZO6’s on the showroom floor because loyal die hard Corvette owners are not going to pay the crazy mark ups. I want to see what the first ones sell for at Manheim Auctions. That will be interesting!!

  5. The cover picture for your article is the showroom of Stingray Chevrolet, which is NOT charging anything over MSRP for the Z06, base stingray, or any other new C8 model. Their Z06 list is closed, however, after hitting 750 deposits. I think since this article is about Dimmitt (a dealer in the same market as Stingray), you should change the picture as it can be very misleading to anyone in the central Florida area who is familiar with the big store off i-4 (Stingray).

  6. What scumbags…

Yeap, they can do as they wish and they don’t seem interested in changing their ways, as long as some customers are willing to pay the premium. What sucks is that they are supposed to be representing GM, and this is how many interpret it.

    Screw em…look elsewhere!

  7. How high is “UP”?? A few suckas might pay the markup, but once it gets into Ferrari/Lambo/McLaren money, why buy a Corvette?

  8. Or, you could be the guy who gets lucky and buys one from a dealer at 10k over MSRP then flips it immediately for 50 k over. The dealer has the big investment. If anyone deserves to sell the car an what the market will bring, it’s the guy with the big investment (the dealer)

  9. I have heard through Z06 enthusiast circles that a dealer intended to ask $200,000 over. They can ask anything but will anyone pay that amount? Are they looking to sell to those in Dubai? Maybe. One or two cars might sell for that big money but it puts them in a bad light and if they are getting more than a couple cars, they are not going to get huge markups and every car. Recall in 1990 a Porsche 911 Speedster listed at $150,000 that had an MSRP at about $70,000 or less. I really doubt it ever sold for that. I had bought one at less than MSRP. I believe a lot of them will sell for as much as $20,000 over and I would pay $10,000 over if I could advance my position by more than a year. A friend walked into a dealer in SoCal that had a limited edition yellow C7 Z06 at that time and wanted $20,000+ over. He offered MSRP cash that day only and they took it.

  10. Stop crying guys, You don’t have to buy a corvette Z06 to impress people that hates you. If you cant pay for it go buy a Toyota corolla and donate the difference to some homeless people shelters. .

  11. As I did…. feel free to send your heartfelt thanks via the Contact Us on the Dimmitt Chev website. https://www.dimmittchevrolet.com/ Let them know your thoughts. I’m sure they would love to hear from you.

Proud C7 Z06 Owner that was purchased at a reasonable price (full MSRP).

  12. It is a supply and demand world, and there are a lot of people out there that have too much money. GM is not going to do anything to any of these greedy dealers.

  13. I was talking to one of the car dudes that goes to our local donut derelicts car meetup about this and he said “$100K over? You could find an arsonist to burn the place to the ground for $50K and then those allocations would go to another dealer!” I said dude, why would anyone risk going to jail just to get a car at MSRP? 😁

  14. Inflation and economic realities are going to wash out the flippers that exacerbated this problem in the first place. The days of buying whatever at 0% and flip it are fading so give it a bit of time and even this ADM fad will pass and with good research and patience a Z06 can be in anybody’s future that really want the car to keep it at MSRP.

  15. Bitcoin at $27700, FANG stocks lost 25+percent, Nasdaq and S P tanking, interest rates skyrocketing, among other things. No more free money, game is going to change. Save your cash for the deals later this year.

  16. Maybe Bowling Green should look into people buying direct from factory. I bet they wouldn’t be able to keep up with the orders and they could make a half decent profit.

  17. They already can’t keep up with the orders. How many Z06 are they going to make in 2023? 500? 1000?

  18. I can think of dozen or more prestigious vehicles in that price range in the used and new market I’d rather own. I’m looking at Ferrari as one of the many. Chevy can take their Wish designed Ferrari and shove their golf bags right up it’s trunk!

  19. At $100,000.00 over MSRP you are now in Ferrari Roma or Ferrari Portofino territory. You’d have to silly to get half your money’s worth.

  20. This is fixable. If GM doesn’t like “dealer premiums” and the bad PR, then subtract that dealer’s allocation and send it to a dealer somewhere else. Dealers can make a good, honest profit selling at MSRP. So calling for “free market price gouging” is baloney. Dealers screwing the customer should be avoided and shamed.

  21. Clearwater area is a dump anyway. They mark up vehicles in hopes a drug dealer pays their mark up prices since they didn’t do much for the money.

  22. I traded a ’19 for an ordered ’21 and waited from Sept. of ’20 till May of ’21 for it but it is one hellava ride. Paid $22,000 difference for it and am extremely happy with it. Bought it at Lewisburg Cadillac Chevrolet in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

  23. HERE WE GO AGAIN EVERYONE SHOW US YOU HAVE MORE MONEY THAN BRAINS AGAIN WHO IS FIRST IN LINE ??? CORVETTE BLOGGER PUT A LIST ONLINE OF DEALERS CHARGING OVER STICKER

  24. First of all what a ripp off, then a Ferrari you say?? Completely impractical, not a daily driver, small fortune to maintain, stupid idea. GM could cut their allocations but in all reality they will be flipped for a profit. Now if GM would pull their head out of their ass and just friggen build them, of course that means finding reliable suppliers. Build as many as ordered of all models, I’m a Chevy guy but I am shaking my head at them of late. Think I’ll stick with my pristine low mile 11′ 3LT Grand Sport.

  25. Hey Greg, hope you still love that German POS after you get smoked by a C8 ZO6 lol. Glorified VW. I wonder why you don’t see much of this commotion about those German things, ya not as popular.

  26. Here’s an idea for how GM could put some teeth in the allocation process to punish dealers charging ADM:

REDUCE A DEALER’S ALLOCATION by some MULTIPLE of the ADM divided by the normal profit on each car sold at MSRP.

For example, if Dimmitt is charging $100K over sticker and they were going to make a (fictional) $10K per Z06 sold at MSRP, then they lose 10 cars (or 20, or 30 or some multiple) from their normal allotment for EVERY screw job sold, to the point that they get no cars for a substantial period if they keep screwing customers.

Sure some lawyer would sue, but GM can certainly justify its allotment practices based on lower customer satisfaction at dealers selling over MSRP. THOUGHTS?
