[VIDEO] Speed Phenom Talks Corvette Z06 Handling Secrets with a Chevy Suspension Engineer

YouTuber Speed Phenom is back for another video featuring his trip to Laguna Seca Raceway. He already shared his very cool POV video as he rode shotgun with the great Ron Fellows at the wheel. That’s a video you won’t want to miss! Now he is back discussing the Corvette Z06’s suspension and track setup with a Corvette suspension engineer named Mike Hurley.

Mike says the Z06s ride needed to feel as visceral and alive as the bespoke LT6 V8 engine, and so it was important that the FE7 Z07 suspension had to be brought up to the same level as the rest of the car. Spring rates and ride frequencies are about 30% higher than the Z51 Stingray, and there’s an additional bump when measuring the difference between FE6 (base Z06) to FE7 (Z07). However, you also have to consider that the FE7’s Michelin Cup 2Rs make a huge difference.

The engineer also confirms that the Z06 base and Z07 share the same Magnetic Ride Control calibrations, but there is a difference in suspension calibrations between the base and Z07 packages. He also confirms that the Carbon Fiber wheels have their own steering calibrations due to the difference in weight and responsiveness.

Last up is a look at a Torch Red Z6 Coupe with the Carbon Flash painted carbon fiber aero package. Chevy said last week that if you order the carbon flash painted carbon fiber wheels, you also had to order the carbon flash painted aero. If I am not mistaken, Speed wants a Torch Red Z06 for himself but will obviously spring for the visible carbon fiber wheels and aero.
