When the C8 Corvette Stingray first hit the scene, we were amazed how the car seemingly made track heroes out of ordinary drivers. With a couple clicks to engage launch control, the Stingray could do a full send in under three seconds with owners posting videos of their fastest times to YouTube. If the 495-hp Stingray could run 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and in some cases even faster, we can only imagine what the times would be for the 670-hp Z06 and its huge 345-sized rear tires putting the rubber to the road.

Buyers selecting the Z07 Performance Package will see the addition of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R ZP tires which have been described as street-legal racing slicks. With the mid-engine layout featuring a 60% weight bias over the rear wheels, Chevrolet claims the Z07 Coupe can run 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds.

During Friday’s NCM Bash at the National Corvette Museum, Corvette Product Marketing Manager Harlan Charles and Vehicle Chief Engineer Josh Holder held their annual GM Team seminar and one of the new features on the 2023 Corvette Z06 will allow drivers to customize their launch control RPM based on the amount of traction available.

As the slide shows, the LT6 engine and DCT torque are optimized for each RPM selection. The higher the RPM selection, the greater the torque output which leads to the fastest potential acceleration. Further customization allows drivers to also adjust the traction control based on tire spin.

After the seminar, we tracked down members of the Corvette Team to ask about this new feature as we had some additional questions. (As an aside, this is why being at the Bash with the Corvette’s engineers is such a great opportunity to get instant answers from those who performed the actual Launch Control tests.) My question to Chevy’s engineers asking what the default RPM for the Z06’s launch control had one team member calling that team member that did the launch control testing. The answer: 4500 is the Z06s default RPM for launch control.

We were also told that the RPM range available to Z06 drivers can be set as low as 3500 RPM and up to a max of 5000 RPM. (The 5500 RPM shown in the slide is probably an older selection according to another engineer.)

With the ability to raise the launch RPM higher based on the amount of traction, we can imagine the C8 Z06 will shine even more when visiting a prepped drag strip. Should drivers find themselves using launch control on a surface that offers less traction, they can now lower the RPM or adjust the amount of slip to optimize the ability of the car to hook up and go.

We expect this new launch control feature will be fully explored once America’s Newest Supercar arrives later this summer and we can’t wait to see the results!

  1. Well that is great but how about getting cars to the 10,000 plus of us who have put deposits down? Maybe launch control will be another Chinese part that will cause the plant to shut down for a week.

  2. Rather bitter comment, Bill. Do you want to drink some pond water now or wait for the properly barrel aged whiskey?

  3. With the ZO6 having 670hp and more rubber at the rear wheels, I would think that it would be three tenths faster than a C8.
I must say that just the engine sounds are worth it.
