Corvettes For Sale

eBay Find of the Day: Vintage 1957 Corvette Race Car

by Keith Cornett on February 26, 2009

Ebay Find of the Day: 1957 Corvette Race Car

Here is yet another Corvette race car that’s now for sale. This 1957 Corvette roadster was raced back in the sixties and seventies but its most successful campaign came in 1998 when the owner competed in and won the SVRA Paine-Weber Endurance Championship.

Powered by a 283 cubic inch V8 built by Compton Race Engines, this yellow roadster is ready to race. The Corvette underwent a restoration following the 2006 season and is currently set up for competition as a vintage racer. In addition to the new 283 ci V8, the roadster features an upgraded T-10 transmission, new ram clutch, drive shaft and flywheel. A holly 750 delivers the fuel from an ATL 40 gallon fuel cell and cold air box insures plenty of oxygen to the powerplant.

On the outside, the Corvette was repainted in Chrome Yellow and has white racing stripes, racing numbers, grill bar and new ovals. The Corvette can be raced with or without its included hardtop.

We asked our friends at the Registry of Corvette Racecars for an honest opinion about the C1 roadster and they didn’t disappoint:

Keith – This is one of the better prepared straight axle vintage racers. The only thing holding back its value is lack of documented racing history. That would put it in a class with Bob Mouat’s 1957 COPO Air box Fuelie and other straight axles that were actually raced, most of which we know well and are now sitting in museums.

Mac Lyle of Rock Hill, SC built the car. I have not seen it on the circuit since 1998 when they blitzed the SVRA to win the Paine-Weber Endurance Championship.

The downside is that the car is way too race improved and would probably not be allowed in the Monterey Historic. And although it would be a fun car to drive in SVRA or HSR races, the asking price of $65K seems a bit steep compared with what else that will buy to go vintage racing.

Jan Hyde – Registry of Corvette Racecars

So that being said, here’s your chance to own a vintage Corvette race car that’s track ready. The current bid is $25,427 and the Corvette has a “Buy It Now” price set at $65,000. The auction runs ends Saturday.

Barn Fresh Auction: 1964 Ermine White Corvette Coupe

by Keith Cornett on January 6, 2009

1964 Corvette Coupe Barn Find

Our friends at Valley Auto in Bedford, Pennsylvania continue to amaze us with barn fresh Corvettes to feast our eyes upon this winter. This two-owner 1964 Corvette Coupe appears to be a prime candidate for restoration as the numbers match up to some decent options including the L75 327/300 hp V8. Did someone just say Survivor?

This 1964 Corvette Coupe is nicely optioned with the popular 327 cubic inch L75 V8 engine rated at 300 horsepower, power brakes, power steering and a 4-speed manual gearbox. The Ermine White original paint is still on the car and the inside sports the original red interior. The engine compartment looks to be complete as well. The Corvette is numbers matching on the engine, transmission and rear end.

It’s unfortunate that we don’t know the back story as to why the Corvette was parked for so long. The photos show that by the looks of things, this Sting Ray has been sitting for some time. Check out the trailer photo with the mat or carpet stuck to the right front tire.

The 1964 Corvette was placed on eBay December 29th with an opening bid of $500 and a buy-it-now button at $31,995. The auction runs through December 8th and already there have been 14 bidders and 27 bids. The current bid stands at $26,660 with the reserve not yet met.

1975 Corvette Greenwood SportWagon

The story behind the SportWagon Corvette goes that a drummer commissioned the first wagon concept because he needed the cargo room to haul his drums to various gigs. Looking to make a good design better, the Greenwoods greatly improved upon the concept and an earlier kit designed by Chuck Miller by making the SportWagon much more aerodynamic and aesthetically pleasing, as well as giving the SportWagon the much needed rear hatch to allow access to the rear of the Corvette. After a mockup was sent to SEMA where it became an instant hit, John Greenwood then farmed out actual production through kits from American Custom Industries and Ecklers.

It’s estimated that between 15 and 24 SportsWagons were produced from the kits sold by ACI and Ecklers, and those kits contained several cues that show it was an official Greenwood SportWagon kit. The Greenwood logo was etched into the rear glass and an emblem was tastefully added to the B-pillar located behind driver and passenger windows.

This 1975 Corvette SportWagon is being offered from Coffee’s Corvette and Classics in Old Forge, PA. Painted in Classic White with a Black interior and Black Spoiler, this SportWagon features those Greenwood design cues mentioned above. This Corvette is powered with a stock L48 350 cubic inch V8 coupled to an automatic transmission and is listed for $29,900. A head turner anywhere, this SportWagon is ready for the weekend car show or a trip to Home Depot. Additional details and Contact information can be found at VetteFinders.com

eBay Find of the Day: The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

by Keith Cornett on December 2, 2008

The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

Put together a group of crazy engineers, a totaled ’86 Corvette barn car and a challenge that most would walk away from and you’ve got the makings of a great story. The Cheaparral J2J “Sucker Vette” is the result of over 3,000 hours of hard work and advanced engineering skills and now it can be yours as the Corvette is being offered on eBay with proceeds benefitting the United Way.

A group of engineers at Proctor & Gamble got together and built this one of kind of custom Corvette to compete in the $2007 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. The Challenge pits competitors in a number of events in a car that must cost less than $2,007.

The Cheaparral team found their 1986 Corvette parked in a nearby barn and purchased the wreck for $1,400. They then had to put their creative talents to work in keeping the costs to under the $2,007 spending limit. After the Corvette was made rode worthy and twin turbochargers were added for power, the engineers decided they needed a little something extra to give them more of an edge in the autocross competition.

The solution came in the form of an M1 Abrams tank cooling fan that was mounted in the passenger seat and powered by a snowmobile engine. The fan evacuates 10,000 cfm of air from underneath car which generates 1,000 lbs of downforce and allows the Corvette to pull 1.3g on a skidpad. The concept is similar to racing legend Jim Hall’s Chaparral 2J vaccum enhanced “sucker” car from the 1970 Can Am Racing series which served as inspiration for the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette”.

The Cheaparral team competed against 50 others at the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge in Gainsville, FL and won every category including the autocross, concourse, best-engineered award, top finishing team and the 2007 Challenge Overall Champion award.

Following the Challenge, the Sucker Vette has been featured in a number of magazines and at car shows including the Corvette Homecoming event in Bowling Green. The Cheaparral recently made a trip out to the west coast to Jay Leno’s garage where the noted auto enthusiast proclaimed the Corvette “cool”.

The ebay auction of the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette” will benefit the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. The Corvette features the signitures of Jay Leno and Jim Hall who both had the opportunity to give the “sucker Vette” a drive. Bidding started at the team’s investment of $2,007 and the auction runs through December 11th.

Mario Andretti Selling His Corvette Z06 for a Corvette ZR1

by Keith Cornett on November 24, 2008

Mario Andretti in his 2006 Corvette Z06

Continuing his quest for speed and performance, noted race car driver and long time Corvette owner Mario Andretti is selling his 505 horsepower 2006 Corvette Z06 to make room for a 638-horsepower 2009 Corvette ZR1. Mario considers the Corvette Z06 to be on his very favorite cars although we are sure he’ll love the new supercharged Corvette as well. And how about this personal touch on his new Corvette ZR1 pruchase: Mario is reportedly in line to get VIN #500.

Mario Andretti’s Machine Silver Corvette Z06 has all the features you would want: 2LZ preferred equipment package, navigation system, polished aluminum wheels, and a Magnaflow Exhaust. With just 8,660 miles on the odometer, the Corvette is well-priced at $54,500.

Paul Teutul Sr and his 2009 Corvette ZR1

The selling of Corvette Z06′s for Corvette ZR1′s is becoming an interesting trend among those who until this summer already owned the top-of-the-line performance Corvette. Paul Tuetul Sr of Orange County Choppers fame becomes the latest celebrity to join the ranks of the ZR1 owners club after taking delivery of his 638 horsepower Corvette over the weekend from Kerbeck in Atlantic City. Paul Sr put his 2006 Corvette Z06 up for auction on eBay last week to make room for his new Cyber Gray ZR1. Unfortunately, the bidding stalled at $48,000 and failing to reach reserve, the Black Z06 went unsold.

If you are interested in Mario Andretti’s Corvette Z06 or perhaps upgrading to the 2009 Corvette ZR1, visit Kerbeck Corvette or call Corvette Specialist Dave Salvatore at 877-537-2325.

Thanks Larry for the tip!

Opportunity Rumbles Like a 427: Proteam Corvette Is For Sale

by Keith Cornett on November 19, 2008

Proteam Corvette Collection

I received the monthly email from Proteam Corvettes and had to read the first paragraph three times to make sure it was saying what I thought it was. I still didn’t quite believe it so I fired off an email to Terry Michaelis and he confirmed what I read: Terry and his brother Fred are putting the world-renowned dealership and its collection of 200 classic Corvettes up for sale.

Terry says they’ve been kicking around the idea for several years and now they’ve made it official. That first paragraph stated the following:

And speaking of opportunity… why not consider buying all ProTeam’s Corvettes at cost and the engine (company) that has driven impressive cash flow and profits for over 20 years. Yep! That’s right! Fred and I have been banging the sell idea around for several years and we feel confident that capable, informed and interested parties are right here in our database… well poised to acquire the ProTeam business and take it to the next level.

Proteam’s collection of classic Corvettes, many with NCRS Top Flight, Bloomington Gold and Triple Crown designations, is truly second to none. Terry is a well known fixture at all the classic Corvette and muscle car auctions and only bids on and buys the best cars. He also doesn’t let emotions get in the way and will pass on a Corvette if he feels the bid went higher than his target. Not seeing him working the paddock or sitting front row at a Mecum auction with that detached look on his face will take some time to get used to.

Let’s take a look at exactly is included in opportunity:

  • Inventory – The world’s largest collection of over 200 classic Corvettes, with many being beautifully restored to like-new condition and carrying prestigious honors such as the Bloomington Gold Certification, the coveted NCRS Top Flight award, and the Triple Crown designation.
  • People – A highly competent management team and operating personnel secured by employment contracts with key personnel.
  • Customer Base – A customer list spans all 50 states and 38 countries around the globe.
  • Contact Lists – A conventional mailing list that includes 350,000 contacts and an e-mail list that includes 40,000.
  • Marketing Foundation – Ownership of the ProTeam brand and its extensive bank of marketing concepts and strategies, as well as the ProTeam website (operative since 1995) and more than 60 domain names/URLs.
  • Facilities & Equipment – Approximately 60,000 sq. ft. of storage buildings to house the inventory as well as the facilities, transportation and capital equipment required to restore, repair, service, maintain and display purchased Corvettes as they arrive.
  • Processes & Systems – Proprietary sales, service, and accounting systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Cash Flow – The ongoing annual cash flow generated from the business due to effective application of people, processes, and assets.

It took all of a nanosecond to realize that my pockets are a little light to take advantage of this opportunity. The price needed to buy this world renowned Corvette dealership is undisclosed but if you’re interested in finding our more, here are the steps you’ll need to take:

  1. Indication of Interest – Email David Rupp with your indication of interest at rupp@mccannrupp.com
  2. Pre-Qualification – To pre-qualify, you must provide your credit references, your basic plan for funding a purchase of this magnitude, and your permission to discuss your funding capability with your banker or similar folks at the appropriate time.
  3. Confidentiality Agreement – Once you’re pre-qualified, you will be sent a confidentiality agreement.
  4. Information Packet & Bid Instructions – Subsequent to receiving your signed CA, Proteam will send you a detailed information packet on the company as well as further instructions regarding the bid submission process.

We’ll be following this story closely and will see if we can get any updates when we see Terry at Mecum’s Kissimmee Florida auction in January, assuming that the dealership hasn’t changed hands at that time.

Custom 4-Door Corvette is Fun for the Whole Family

by Keith Cornett on November 11, 2008

1987 Corvette 4-Door with Suicide Doors

One of the curses, or blessings depending on your outlook is the fact that the Corvette is a 2-seat sports car. Room enough for you and a buddy or your significant other, but no more. Gene Swatek thought the Corvette should be a car that could be enjoyed by the whole family, so he custom built what I am sure is the world’s only 1987 four-door Corvette.

The father of four girls got the idea for the custom 4-seater after going to Corvette shows and wishing he could take more of his family. To create his 4-door sports car, Gene took a driver quality stock 1987 corvette and it in half. He made his own steel extension frame members to stretch the Corvette an additional 38 inches. The rear suicide doors were added as well as the rear leather seats and custom ground effects.

1987 Corvette 4-Door with Suicide Doors 1987 Corvette 4-Door with Suicide Doors 1987 Corvette 4-Door with Suicide Doors

Gene says the Corvette took about 18 months to build and while he had plans to custom build a convertible top that could stretch over the extended passenger area, time got away from him and he never got around to doing it. According to Gene, the convertible is so much fun, who needs a top or windows anyways!

The FamilyVette II as its called is the second of Gene’s elongated Corvette creations, hence the II. His first FamilyVette was a red 1984 limo-styled Corvette made from 2/3′s of the front of one Corvette and 2/3′s of the rear from another. You can see more of his work at www.familyvettes.com.

The white 1987 Corvette is currently for sale with a listing on eBay but no bids have yet to have been laid on the custom car yet. The auction ends on November 18th and the starting bid is $12,000.
