With this 1957 Corvette so close to the finish line, we wonder why the owner is throwing in the towel now and putting it up for auction on eBay out of Wichita, Kansas.
This vintage C1 has already undergone a lot of work, with a frame-off restoration undertaken at some point in the past, and now it just seems to need a little fine-tuning to complete the transformation.
Bidders have taken note of the car’s condition, with 25 offers already submitted on the way to reach a high of $65,300 that’s nevertheless still short of the reserve.
Old photos verify that the restoration started with an extensive refreshening of the frame and the work still looks good. No word on whether the Onyx Black with Silver coves paint job is true to the trim tag, but we are told the “perfect” body has never been hit. The new lacquer paint may just be a wet sand and polish away from turning this car into a real showpiece.
Likewise, no details are offered on the red interior, but a glimpse at the photos confirms that it’s been nicely updated, with the seat covers, carpet, and dash looking great. The original radio and heater are still in place, completing the look of originality.
Of course, Corvettes were just starting to really attract buyers by ’57, with much of the credit going to the improvements being made under the hood. In this case, the original numbers-matching 283/270 horsepower V8 engine with dual four-barrel carburetors is still in place, along with the four-speed manual transmission with original shifter and the original 3:70 Positraction rear end.
Mechanically, the car still needs a few minor items like a front-end alignment, a tuning of the rebuilt engine that already runs, and a check of the gauges to make sure they’re functional. The car includes the soft top as well as a hardtop that just needs the supplied headliner to be installed.
