Here's How Corvettes Have Performed Over the Years in Car and Driver's Lightning Lap

Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap for 2024 is now in the books as the 2024 Corvette E-Ray becomes the latest Corvette to run VIR’s 4.1-mile Grand Course. Corvettes have been part of this competition since the beginning in 2006 when the Lightning Lap was first envisioned, and over the last 17 years a total of 16 different Corvette models have competed for Lightning Lap glory.

Alright, alright, alright!

I’m channeling my inner-Matthew McConaughey this morning as we learned that Chevrolet has sent out some additional allocations for a 2nd February order cycle. Dealers received their “estimated ship” numbers on Thursday afternoon, and the order banks will open on February 29th to accept those customer-matched and dealer stock orders. We’ll also have updated Constraints next week but I don’t think they will change all that much from what we saw a week ago.

Our only question is, with a 1967 Sting Ray convertible with a 427 big-block and a 2015 Z06 coupe with a seven-speed manual both in his garage, how does the owner ever decide which one to drive!

2024 Corvette E-Ray Hits VIR for Lightning Lap 17

Car and Driver’s premiere event, Lightning Lap, or as we like to call it, “proof that anyone spending more than Corvette money on a performance car is just flushing their cash down the toilet,” is back for its 17th incarnation! America’s Favorite Sports Car has been a fixture of LL since the beginning, with new Corvettes on hand for all but three of the annual mega track tests (and in years without a new addition to the Corvette lineup, there’s always been a Camaro there to carry the Chevrolet Performance flag). Last year, the C8 Z06 set multiple records in its debut on the 4.1-mile Grand Course at Virginia International Raceway. This time around, it’s the hybrid AWD Corvette E-Ray’s turn to prove its worth, and we’ve never been more interested to see how a ‘Vette handles itself in a performance gantlet!

The 94-year-old driver of a black C6 Corvette coupe faces multiple citations after a two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon that caused a pickup to overturn in Roseburg, Oregon.

Local police say Weyland Phillips was traveling west on Northeast Oakland Avenue in a Corvette when he allegedly quickly tried to cross Northeast Stephens Street without coming to a complete halt at the stop sign. In the process, the Corvette struck a pickup driven by a 51-year-old headed south on Northeast Stephens.

A photo from the scene shows the Corvette lost its front clip and driver’s door (likely due to the eventual extrication of the driver by emergency crews), coming to rest on the sidewalk next to a sign for Apex Ace Home Center. In another photo, the truck was shown upside down on the edge of the Apex property facing west, with its camper cover knocked loose and lying upright nearby on Stephens Street.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

Both drivers were transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries and have now been released.

The 94-year-old Corvette driver was cited for having no operator license, driving uninsured, and careless driving.
