Now here’s a cool piece of Corvette memorabilia that you don’t see every day! If you’re looking for an engine upgrade for your ride, check out this 427 cubic inch GM racing short block currently up for bids with no reserve on Bring a Trailer.
According to the BaT listing, the short block was built by GM racing in 2002 and then sent to Katech Engineering in 2009. There, the 356-T6M aluminum alloy block was enhanced with a Callies 4inch crankshaft and 6inch connecting rods, Katech flat top pistons, GM piston rings, plus Clevite main and rod bearings. After the build, the engine remained in its crate until earlier this month.
Katech Engineering has been designing and building some of the hottest engines in the aftermarket and motorsports industries for nearly 50 years. Their powerplants have found victory lane and taken championship trophies in NASCAR, IROC, Grand-Am, ALMS, and even the IRL. Their engines powered the dominant Corvette C5-R racers that won countless times in the U.S. plus 6 triumphs at the 24hours of LeMans. Racing legends such as Dale Earnhardt, Johnny O’Connell, and Ron Fellows have piloted Katech powered racecars to victory lane.
The block looks to be a blank slate patiently awaiting your finishing touches. The possibilities are nearly endless here. The no reserve sale includes several additional items including fasteners, a timing chain and gear, various gaskets, a belt tensioner, and much more. The seller has neatly listed all the extra items included with the block in the Comments section.
Receipts from the Katech build are shown in the photos. It appears the buyer just needs to add some heads, an intake, electronics, and finishing touches to make a complete running engine.
As we write this post, the bid stands at $10,000 with the auction closing on Tuesday, July 1st at 5:17 PM ET
So, what would you do with this short block? Build a killer street motor? Put it in a vintage racer? Leave it alone and show it off to your friends? Let us know your thoughts in our Comments below.
