It was back in 2007 that we first wrote about this rare 1957 Corvette equipped with a factory airbox which routed cold air to the fuel injection unit. Only 43 Corvettes in 1957 had the RPO 579E/D option with this former barn find being the “pilot” car for the run.
We just came across this YouTube video that features the first 1957 airbox Corvette, and it’s very well done. The video details the unique history of the car which was raced by a small-town dealer for a year before it was put up for sale. Eventually it ended up in pieces inside a barn on a farm in Ohio before being rescued by several Corvette enthusiasts who figured out pretty quickly that they had something special.
In 2018, we wrote about this airbox 1957 Corvette once again as it was being offered for sale. The price at that time was $900K for the black Corvette, although we are unsure if its owner Bill Connell sold the car.
From SpeedvisionTV via YouTube:
Airbox Corvette: The very first production line racing Corvette. Only 43 of these racing model cars were produced by Chevy and fewer than half of them exist today. The “airbox” car found was the prototype for all of the subsequent Corvettes in the 1957 line.
