Mecum Auctions will be rolling out its red carpet at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in the city of Dallas for its annual collector car auction on September 4-7. Collector car enthusiasts will have 1,500 reasons to watch and bid with a variety of American muscle cars, classics, hot rods, and of course, plenty of Corvettes offered at the event.
Dallas is always a highlight on our calendar for the quality of consignments that the auction attracts. We’re already counting 143 Corvettes listed on the schedule and they cover all eight generations. In addition to individual Corvette offerings at the auction, collections are also bringing Corvettes to the Big-D including A Private No-Reserve Collection, The Mopars 5150 Collection, and even a Mach 5 recreation offered from the Texas Movie Car Collection.
As far as Corvette Consignments go, the Dallas 2024 docket is heavy with C2s and C3s leading the way. While we do see a high concentration of the classics, the C4, C5, and C7s also provide a nice selection of opportunities for Corvette buyers. We also see several great restomods and custom Corvettes being offered; and there are no less than five Corvette ZR1s up for grabs. All eyes will be on one of Mecum’s main attractions: the last C7 Corvette ZR1 produced.
Here is the current breakdown of Corvettes for Mecum Dallas as we go to press:
There are so many great cars being offered, but we found these six Corvettes to watch at Mecum Dallas:
LOT F202.1 – 1961 Corvette Big Brake Fuelie Convertible
Back in 1961, if you were serious about performance, you would order your 1961 Corvette with Chevy’s 283/315 HP fuel-injected V-8 along with option code 687, which added heavy duty brakes, suspension, springs, shocks, a stabilizer bar, metallic brakes, cooling fans and a fast steering adapter to the car. This Roman Red 1961 Corvette Convertible is one of just 233 equipped with option code 687 and is powered by a matching numbers fuel-injected 283/315 HP engine. Adding to its creds as a racer are its T10 4-speed manual transmission, a 3.70 positraction rear end, and off-road exhaust. Inside is a Red interior with a Wonderbar radio, courtesy lights, heater, windshield washers and sun visors. The Convertible has both a white soft top and the auxiliary hardtop in matching Red. Documentation includes the Owner’s manual and sales brochure. In 2011, this car was invited to MCACN for their special 50th Anniversary display.
LOT F110 – 1965 Corvette Coupe Restomod
Crossing the block on Friday is this sinister 1966 Corvette Coupe Restomod powered by a GM Performance 6.2L 650 HP LT4 V-8 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Coupe rides on an SRIII tubular chassis and features a C6 suspension, Viking double adjustable coilovers, and Wilwood brakes. The body of the ’66 Sting Ray had its fenders widened 1.5 inches, which allows it to ride on huge Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that are wrapped around Forgeline’s DE3C center locking wheels. The exterior of the car is PPG Jet Black paint with a Matte Black stinger and Red accents. A stripped-down custom interior was created by Customs by Vos with Black leather and Alcantara with Red stitching, while the dash features Classic Instruments’ Auto Cross gauges. The driver will also be able to keep their cool thanks to a Vintage Air System. Clearly, this 1966 Corvette Sport Coupe underwent a comprehensive frame-off custom build and the details show.
LOT F177 – 1973 Corvette Coupe
An offering from A Private No Reserve Collection is this highly original 1973 Corvette T-Top Coupe in Elkhart Green with Black interior. Power comes from its matching numbers L48 350/190 HP V-8 engine with an automatic transmission, and it’s further optioned with power steering, power brakes, and factory air conditioning. The odometer reads 6,121 miles. This 1973 Corvette is documented with its original window sticker and has been judged multiple times, earning Bloomington Gold Benchmark, Survivor and Gold Certification in 2023, an NCRS Top Flight, and the MCACN Triple Diamond award in 2023.
LOT F35 – 1990 Corvette R9G Race Car
As a follow up to the Corvette Challenge series in the late 1980s, Chevrolet offered another RPO R9G option for would-be racers in the Escort World Challenge with the 1990 R9G Corvette. Only 23 of these spec Corvettes were built and this car is 1 of only 8 R9G Corvettes to have been actually raced. This R9G World Challenge Car was part of the famous Baker Race Team and was previously part of the Chip Miller Collection. It’s powered by a 5.7L VET1806 race V-8 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the same combination these cars came from the factory with. Per race regulations, the car is also equipped with a SCCA roll cage. The Corvette is offered in its Yellow race livery and it has a Black interior. Documentation includes a copy of its window sticker, and it is sold on a Bill of Sale.
LOT S218 – 2019 Corvette ZR1 Coupe
One of Mecum’s Main Attraction offerings at the Dallas 2024 auction is the last C7 ZR1 Corvette produced! This Arctic White 2019 Corvette ZR1 Coupe was the last to roll off the line and it was delivered at the National Corvette Museum. Equipped with the supercharged 6.2L/755 HP LT5 V-8 engine, it has the coveted 7-speed manual transmission, the last year of the manual transmission in the Corvette. This ZR1 wears the visible carbon fiber ground effects package with the low-wing, and it has a visible carbon fiber removable roof panel. The 3ZR trim package includes an Adrenaline Red and Black interior with a carbon fiber and leather-wrapped steering wheel, memory package, heated and ventilated seats, performance data recorder and more. The odometer reads 14 miles. Documentation includes its window sticker, build sheet, photo of the car at the factory, and a very rare first start video.
