Maybe the owner didn’t want to see his 1988 Corvette flip over to 100,000 miles.
That’s one possible explanation why the owner of this C4 Corvette drove it into a storage unit, disconnected the battery, and then left it there for 24 years – with 99,783.2 miles showing on the odometer! It was last registered in Texas in 1997.
It was last registered in Texas in 1997, but now someone has purchased the car through a storage lien auction and has put it up for sale on craigslist for $4,000. While it’s said to have been purchased legally in a storage lien auction and the seller has all the receipts and paperwork, he says one notarized form was incorrectly filled out and therefore a bonded title is required.
Despite being neglected for so long, we’ve seen cars in worse condition. Layers and layers of dust covered this Corvette while it was in the storage unit, but it seems to have cleaned up fairly nicely, with the most significant paint damage being some pretty deep scratches on the body-color removable roof panel. You’ll also notice a set of ’96 Collector Edition wheels have been installed at some point, recently or long ago, we aren’t told?
The still somewhat dusty interior, meanwhile, features tan cloth seats that actually look pretty decent for having almost been used for nearly 100,000 miles.
The L98 V8 engine that made 245 horsepower is still there, but the seller, being a cautious sort, says he has not tried to start the car. He believes it will require a fuel pump, not to mention new hoses, belts, and the like, at the very least.
One attractive feature is the manual transmission, though some folks don’t particularly care for the Doug Nash 4+3 that was a four-speed manual with overdrive in the top three gears.
With C4 prices so low these days, we’re not sure this is a smart buy at $4,000, considering it will need at least a set of tires, probably new brakes, and who knows whether the electronic arcade dash is still operational or in need of repair.
It might make more sense to pay a little more up front and get a C4 that you know doesn’t have so many potential problems. But maybe you’re the person who would like the honor of flipping it past 100K. What’s your take?
