Today is the 60th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang and we here at CorvetteBlogger would like to wish all of our Ford friends well and to say thanks for all the great memories over the years. Yes, Corvettes compete with Mustangs while GM and Ford compete for customers. In the end we are all automotive enthusiasts who love our cars. Like many of us, the bond between a Ford Mustang owner and the brand is unbreakable.

Here’s a tweet from Ford President Jim Farley to mark the occasion:

Fyi. My second car was a Black/Red 1979 Ford Mustang hatchback which I got my senior year in high school, and I drove the hell out of it before the little 4-banger engine gave up. Back in the day I subscribed to all the Mustang magazines and could even spout about the differences between a small block Windsor engine and the 351ci Cleveland. I also started a Ford Mustang classified ads website years ago called MustangFinders, but I just didn’t have the same passion for it as I did for Corvette.

I also like to remind my Ford friends that the Boss 302 Mustang was penned by noted Corvette designer Larry Shinoda and the Boss name was also a homage to Bunkie Knudsen, a former GM executive who was also a Corvette guy. So you’re welcome!

Jim Farley also posted this memo from Lee Iacocca which takes direct aim at Chevy’s Camaro:

And finally, Ford is doing a special 60th Anniversary special edition to celebrate!

Congratulations on 60 Years to the Ford Mustang and to all who love this great pony car!

  1. After returning from active duty in ‘72, I went back to a job waiting for me, then proceeded to get my first new car…a ’72 medium green metallic Mustang fastback. Paid a whopping 3300 bucks for it. Ahh, the good old days!

  2. Came home from Viet Nam in 68,and in 69 bought a white 69 Shelby Mustang Boss 429. White with the Shelby blue graphics. Fastest car I had ever owned. Sold it to start my motorcycle business in 70. If I had it today I could sell it and buy 2 Corvettes that either one would smoke it. My 23 70th HTC Z51 is now the fastest car I have ever owned. Not sure it will ever appreciate to what the 429 Shelby has.

  3. Yes, Congratulations Ford Motor Company.

Like others here, I started on my automotive journey (high school) with a dark green metallic, black top, 1969 Mustang convertible, handed down to me by my father. A 351 Windsor four barrel, FMX three speed auto, with a nine inch rear end, carrying 3.25 gears.
Some of my favorite times has to be street racing my buddy in his primer gray 1967 Camaro Z28 302 through the I-90 tunnel (Mount baker tunnel, Seattle) traveling East bond towards Mercer Island Where I had resided.

“The deep rich sounds that emanated between our two hot rods, at full throttle, coupled with the reverberation that was felt by the surrounding concrete, made it a truly awe inspiring experience.”

    Many thanks,
    Ray

  4. Vehicle Choice is under attack! When will someone driving their ’69 Mustang be pulled over, the tag removed.. a roll back called, and the officer says: “do not drive this on the highway
ever again”. [trailer it to car shows] Sounds crazy, huh. States are clamoring now to preserve
vehicle choices, now. I grew up with Muscle Cars! It’s a free country! back OFF, greenies..!
