Report: Mid-Engine Mustang Inbound to Do Battle with C8 Corvette

A breaking Ford Authority report that is neither tagged as satire nor dated April 1st – we triple-checked on both fronts – claims that the Blue Oval is set to unveil a new Mustang variant that apparently features, get this, a mid-mounted powerplant! FA says that the vehicle in question has already been shown to a select few in Las Vegas and will be revealed to the public during a special event at Pebble Beach as part of Monterey Car Week this Thursday, August 17th.

Other details are sparse, but the report says that the Mid-Stang will be assembled by Multimatic in Canada and, unsurprisingly, it won’t utilize the brand new 7th gen’s front-engine S650 architecture. The brief goes on to question if the new breed of Mustang will be based on Multimatic and Ford’s most famous collaboration: the outgoing Ford GT supercar. On this front, we are going to go out on a limb and peg the likelihood of the $450,000 (minimum) exotic that is almost as fast as a 2019 ZR1 sharing its bespoke chassis with a Mustang as slim-to-none; expect something all-new if this whole thing comes to fruition.

Update: Here is the live reveal video:

While this development comes as a bit of a surprise, and we wonder if the guys behind the ‘Stang-taunting Camaro ZL1 1LE’s secret sauce have the capacity to build anything in significant numbers but, there have been several breadcrumbs leading up to this watershed moment. In the past two years, Ford has been caught benchmarking C8s of both Stingray and Z06 varieties. More importantly, Dearborn already took a bold step towards diversifying the wild horse brand when it forcibly branched it out from its Pony Car roots with the Mach-E crossover that’s spearheading the electric division’s expected $4.5 Billion annual loss, so, really, why not add a mid-engine super ‘Stang to the family, too?

Whatever, if any, form this car takes on Thursday, it will be a welcome rival for America’s Sports Car that has gone without any direct domestic competition since the wonderfully analog Gen V Viper bowed out in 2017! We can’t wait to see this new challenger!

Instagram digital artist stangmodeofficial renders what a mid-engine Mustang might look like. It’s not official, but it does provide some interesting styling clues that may be present on the real car:

  1. If Multimatic builds it rather than Ford, there will only be a very few, as usual. Therefore, a non player, again, as usual.

  2. Ya I’ll believe it when I see it. It is funny that GM designed and built the C8 but Ford has to have somebody else do their version. That’s funny as hell, the old Stang has been through a lot the last several years trying to keep up with the Camaro and C8. Maybe a good excuse for a “New” Mid engine Camaro with 700-800hp and AWD. You listening GM??

  3. Sorry, this is more a million dollar Ford GT than a C8 competitor. Fords gonna have to work long and hard to compete with the C8 Corvette. Though, it’s gonna be interesting to see if this pans out!!!!

  4. Ford build it on the F150 production line. Maybe you can keep the price below $500,000 this time, but wait, how about a V8? So OK, below $600,000 this time.

  5. I’ve been a hard core Corvette fanatic since I was a kid and for the most part I’ve always liked high performance Mustangs too even though I’ve never owned one. All I’ve got to say to Ford about a mid engine model is don’t do it!

  6. I don’t like rendering of how it looks. My C8 Red Mist convertible is way more cooler than this Mustang. I just can’t get into the looks. Sorry, but it’s just not a head turner like my C8.

  7. A $450,000 car that’s “almost as fast as a 2019 Corvette ZR-1” doesn’t make sense. It’s a V6 Ford GT with a different front fascia compared to a supercharged V-8 car (that ZR-1) or the V8 current model mid engine Z06 Corvette.

  8. I think Ford forgot that mustangs are pony cars, not high end super cars.. what’s next? A mid engine camaro or challenger?? Did Ford give up on its GT platform?? This seems a desperate move for legitimacy. Sad.

  9. This is curious.

When our C8 was being developed, during 2018 & 2019, it was not long until “chazcron” conveniently released fully geometrically accurate renderings, coupled with copius amounts of convenient ‘spy’ shots and videos by “Corvette Nut”. By the time the unveil came, there was little surprise.

Given how recent this news is, and the lack of conveniently ‘leaked’ shots of test vehicles and such, this new Mustang is either a one-off concept demonstrator, a VERY limited edition line, or a body-performance package that has been highly spun by Ford’s PR wizards. In either case, no version of it where this is a GT with a Mustang-inspired front fascia. Cool render, though!

But, stranger things have happened, so we’ll see!

  10. The C8 is not a true corvette, and this mid engine mustang thing is not a true mustang, end of discussion…

  11. Haha you clown trying to act like the Ford GT doesn’t own your stupid zr1.
Total fan boy douchebags. You junk cars can’t compete with a Mustang in the real world (haven’t lost to 1 in 30 years) let alone a GT. EAD

  12. I’m looking at the air intake and either it’s been covered or more likely it’s badly damaged from something. Hell probably not even finished just a mock up!

  13. I remember when Ford did have a mid engine car. I was in the Navy in the early 70s and one of the guys on my ship the USS Leahy DLG16, had one, it was called the PANTERA and man was it nice and was it mean with a 351 Cleveland V8 under the hood or should I say under the rear window. It was quite fast too and this was in 1973 mind you, long before the C8 Corvette.

  14. Ford completely destroyed the Mustang name when they turned it into an SUV. The damage to the nameplate is done and it is irreversible

  15. That rendering looks like a front engine Mustang with the back half of a GT. It doesn’t even look that nice. Like two halves of two different cars put together. Nice concept, but there has to be someone who can make it look better.

  16. Mustang started out as a badass car for the common man. They have been working on it for years but yes ford you finally did it. You created a car to compete with the corvette. A car the common man can only dream of and never afford.
