Corvettes for Sale: One Family Owned 1968 Corvette Coupe

If cars had human emotions, this 1968 Corvette coupe no doubt would be crying.

After all, the only owners it’s known since being purchased new in March 1968 from Pierce Chevrolet in Pawtucket, Rhode Island have all been in the same family till just recently!

Now, though, this unusually equipped vintage C3 is being offered on eBay, where 42 bids have climbed to a high of $20,100 with the auction slated to close Saturday night. In case you don’t want to risk letting this one get away, you can also scoop it up today for the “Buy It Now” price of $25,900.

A few years ago, I purchased a 1971 LT1 coupe that had been nicely restored and was in such good shape that for several years it would remain on the showroom floor of the dealer where I traded it. Unfortunately, I was only able to trace back the ownership line a few years, meaning I never was able to find out more about the restoration. That lack of documentation no doubt hurt the value of my car.

No such problem exists with this 1968 Corvette, however, as it comes with literally hundreds of receipts for work done on the car over the past 56 years – not to mention the original owner’s manual, protect-o-plate, sales brochure, and letter of congratulations from Chevy General Manager E.M. “Pete” Estes. Furthermore, it’s really cool to see the original bill of sale, showing that the customer received a trade-in allowance of $3,250 for their ’67 Sting Ray and then paid just $919 more for their new Stingray that listed for $4,369.

This wasn’t a highly optioned car. In fact, the only additions were an AM/FM radio, speed alert, and whitewall tires, and they were one of only 326 buyers who opted for the no-cost three-speed manual transmission. That rarity could be a factor for the right collector as the overwhelming majority opted instead for the four-speed manual, with a few others choosing the Turbo-Hydramatic automatic.

This car has never been hit, according to the seller, and still boasts its original blue paint and blue vinyl interior and the frame and birdcage are described as “excellent.” “Yes, there are some lacquer checks and slight touch-ups here and there, but overall the paint shows very well,” he says.

The original 327/300 horsepower engine is still under the hood and runs great, according to the listing. The vacuum headlights also work well, though the wiper door sometimes stays up after rising. The gauges all work except for the clock.

The upholstery isn’t perfect, with slight wear and tear on the seatcovers, rear console section, and passenger door trim, but it would definitely be worth trying to find a shop to see if they could make minor repairs to maintain the originality of the car.

“This is a magnificent Corvette,” the seller concludes. “It has everything a collector could want: originality, rarity, paperwork, and beauty.”

  1. Looks like a well kept C3. I thought the 3 speed was a typo until I looked at the pics. I wonder if he wishes he would have kept the ’67 that was traded in. It is easier to look back than forward. I had an chance to buy a ’55 Red 265 V8 3 speed for $50 because it burned a little oil. It was 1966 and I thought the price was a little high. Hind sight and all that.

  2. That’s wild that the original owner only had to give the dealer his 67 Corvette and $919 to buy this beautiful 68 Corvette. The days of doing something like that to get a new Corvette are long gone.
