What could be one of the most collectible versions of the C6 generation is the one-year-only 427 Convertible Collector Edition that was built as a send-off for 2013.
We spotted this Torch Red over Ebony example that’s being offered on craigslist for $47,995 by a dealer northwest of St. Louis, Missouri, and we must admit it has our mouth salivating.
After all, this was the only way to get a convertible sixth-generation version of what is essentially a Z06. You’ll find the same legendary 7.0-liter 505-horsepower LS7 V8 engine, the six-speed manual transmission with a short throw shifter, Magnetic Ride Control, and carbon fiber body panels. The only thing missing from a Z06 coupe is the fixed roof and an aluminum frame (this one is
made of steel).
At the time, the LS7 – hand assembled at GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan – was marketed as one of the fastest and most capable convertibles in the world and at the time was the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible. With its lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, high-flow cylinder heads, and dry sump oil system, the engine propelled the Corvette from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 11.8 seconds, lateral acceleration of 1.04 g on the skid pad, and a top speed of more than 190 mph.
With a curb weight of 3,355 pounds, the LS7 gave the 427 Convertible a power-to-weight ratio of 6.64:1 or 1 horsepower for every 6.64 pounds of mass. Chevrolet claimed that it was a better power-to-weight ration than that of the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet and the Ferrari California.
That level of performance was aided by the 427 Convertible’s use of several carbon fiber components to help with weight reduction, including the carbon fiber raised hood that had first been introduced in the 2011 Z06 Carbon Editions, carbon fiber Z06-style fenders and carbon fiber floor panels.
This one-owner 427 Convertible – #2446 of the 2,552 units built – listed for more than $77,000, has been driven only 39,000 miles, and not surprisingly still looks like new in photos.
Indeed, the seller describes the car as “super clean” with “the utmost care taken by prior ownership to uphold the rarity and value of this beautiful example,” furthermore calling it “one rare Corvette 427 that won’t disappoint.”
