Corvettes for Sale: Barn Find 1964 Corvette

Sometimes you just have to send up the white flag and surrender.

That’s the case with the owner of this 1964 Corvette convertible, who admits that after the recent birth of his third child, he realizes it’s become a project that simply won’t fit into his schedule.

That’s too bad since this vintage Sting Ray has been in the seller’s family since the ’70s, though he admits it’s never been on the road since being purchased and indeed has been stored “for a very long time.” As a result, he’s finally decided to fold his hand and offer the car to someone else on eBay with a “Buy It Now” price of $28,000.

The folks at Barn Finds, where we spotted this potential beauty, asked its readers the question whether this car would be better off as a restomod or a restoration.

The owner, for one, says his plan all along was to go the restomod route since the original engine is long gone and has been replaced with a small-block 350 that’s been updated with a Summit street/strip top end kit with new heads, timing chain and gears, cam, intake, carburetor, distributor, and ignition box. Unfortunately, while the engine now starts and idles, it does not drive, leaks oil and “will need to be gone through,” he reports.

Body-wise, the car has had some work done already, but it’ll need some more to get ready for a new paint job. For some reason, we can’t help but laugh when we see the front turn signal light dangling like a wilted flower from the damaged body.

Inside, the black bucket seats look decent, as do the dash and gauges, but a whole new set of carpeting is required, as well as a look at the steering column that’s been taken apart and put back together incorrectly, leaving a lot of play in the steering wheel. The seller has never checked the electrical items and assumes that they’re not functional.

A bushel of new parts have either been installed or will be included with the sale, including a new high torque starter, flywheel and clutch, body bushings (though the bolts are said to remain loose), weatherstripping, headlight bezels, and four Cooper Cobra radial 235/60/15 tires. A collection of old parts is also being thrown in, including the factory hardtop.

The bottom line is the owner describes his car as “a project” and admits it will require “plenty of love” to get back on the road for the first time in decades. The question remains, is this 1964 “red-headed stepchild” worth $28,000 in its current condition?

  1. At one of the recent Mecum auctions, (2) 64′ Corvettes in show
ready conditions were sold for in the range of $55,00.00 each.
Both were with 3spd manual transmissions, and painted white.

  2. This “red-headed stepchild” is rough! I think it’s only worth $28;000 to the seller and no one else.

  3. Call me crazy but I don’t think it’s beyond salvageable condition. I couldn’t go higher than $20K, though. Drop in an Art Morrison frame / all alum. LS/manual trans/tires & wheels/paint and it might not make you money but I don’t think you’d lose money either.
