The 2024 January auctions are off to a flying start. Mecum Kissimmee just wrapped up nearly 2 weeks in Florida with in the neighborhood of 4,500 cars crossing the auction block. As of this writing, the overall top sale was a stunning 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder that commanded $17.87M. That’s a new record for the most expensive car ever sold by Mecum. In addition, another 15 lots also topped the $1M mark.

The final Kissimmee numbers aren’t published yet as we assemble this piece, but all indications are that this will be yet another record setting event for Mecum Auctions. Would those lofty numbers carry over into Corvette-land? Let’s take a look and find out.

The Corvette docket featured 465 Corvettes at our last count. All generations were represented with everything from daily drivers to exquisitely restored show cars. This could have potentially been the largest selection of Corvettes for sale ever in one spot. As we’ve come to expect from Mecum, they captured some of the very best out there. We saw multiple L88’s and 1963 Z06’s. They offered a pair of GM styling cars, the first fuel injected Corvette, and several of the most desirable options out there including ZR1, LT1, LS6, L71, L89, and more.

Our Top 11 listed actually contains 12 cars this time around. We made the accommodations as the top selling lot featured 2 Corvettes and 1 of the cars technically isn’t even a Corvette though it closely resembles one. We should note here that the red/red 1967 L88 did not sell when it crossed block, but it currently shows as sold on the Mecum website with no price listed. It’s safe to assume that the selling price would move that car into first or second place on our list. Since it’s not officially listed, we’ll keep it off our list. On to the numbers!

The top selling lot in Kissimmee was the first and last L88 collection which brought in $2,585,000 including commissions. The 2-for-1 sale got you the famous black 1967 Delorenzo L88 and the green 1969 L88 coupe in one shot. We were expecting this dynamic duo to bring $3M or more. 2nd place went to a sinister black on red 1963 big tank Z06 which found a new home at $935,000. Interestingly, 2 other Z06’s made their way in to the Top 11 at $770,000, and $385,000 respectively. The 1963 Harley Earl Styling Car rounded out the podium finishers with a $803,000 sale price.

Elsewhere on the Top 11 (ok, 12) list we see a 1969 L88 convertible change hands at $485,000. Dr. Mark Davis’ unrestored 1962 sold for a staggering $456,500. We didn’t look up numbers, but that’s got to be a record sale for a non-racer 1962 Corvette. An award winning red/red 1963 coupe rounded out the list with its $352,000 sale price. A one-off Kindig CF-1 sold for $770,000. It’s technically not a Corvette, but most people consider it to be one, so we’ll roll with that and include it here.

Overall, the total cost of the Kissimmee Top 11 was $8,327,000 which averages out to just over $730,000 per car. Both of those numbers are essentially double what we saw at Kissimmee in 2023. Eliminating the Kindig car, all the cars on our list were built between 1958 and 1969. There’s just 1 C1, 9 C2’s, and 2 C3’s. Continuing a trend we saw last year, there’s just 1 restomod (2 counting the Kindig car) in the Top 11. All the others are stock restored or factory styling examples. In all, over 150 cars (about 32%) bid to or sold at over $100,000. That speaks volumes to the strength of the Corvette market as well as the pedigree of the cars available last week.

C8 Z06’s are still on fire and with 9 up for grabs in Kissimmee. 7 of those sold at an average price of $182k. We continue to see strength in the C4 ZR1 market with 8 sold at an average price of $37.2k. That includes an ultra-low mile 1995 that sold for $66k. Additionally 4 LT5 engines sold between $6-7k. A first-year 1953 changed hands at $352,000.

Some of the notable no-sales included the 1957 first fuelie at $150k, a pair of 1963 restomods at $435k each, and a rare 2008 Pratt and Miller C6 RS at $270,000. As we mentioned earlier, the red/red 1967 L88 was no sale when it crossed the block, but it now shows as sold on the Mecum website. If we confirm the final sales figure we’ll update things here.

Finally, our el cheapo award once again goes to a pair of C4’s. They hold the honor of being the most cost-effective Corvettes in Kissimmee. The dark red 1990 convertible and the black 1994 convertible both found new owners at $4,950 each.

With so many Corvettes available in Kissimmee we could spend hours and hours looking for trends and spikes in the data. Luckily, the Mecum website now makes it super easy to look for specific cars or model years. Be sure to block out some time before falling into that black hole of Corvette goodness. Even if you’re not into the numbers, it’s just plain fun to look at so many nice Corvettes.

With Kissimmee in the rearview mirror, we now look west to Arizona and Mecum Glendale running March 5-9, 2024. We expect we’ll see more of the same results as collectors continue to feast on the buffet of quality collector cars on the market. Keep it tuned here as we’ll be monitoring things as they progress out west.
