The dust has just settled on Mecum’s monster 4,000-car Kissimmee auction and we’re happy to report the collector car hobby appears to be stronger than ever. Money was flying around Florida last week faster than classified documents blowing out of Joe Biden’s garage! Seriously, though, prices were high on seemingly everything.

In 2022, Mecum Kissimmee set the bar with a record $217 million in sales. Factor in more vehicles and strong sales in 2023 and we expect them to easily break that record when the final numbers are tallied.

Thanks to our friend Marshall Fancher at Vette-N-Vestments, we’ve got a rundown of results for the 429 Corvettes offered in Kissimmee. Overall, the Corvette docket showed an impressive 82% sell-through rate while racking up $30.5 million in sales. That translates into 355 Corvettes en route to new homes.

While perusing the docket to prepare our patent-pending Top 11 list, one thing was apparent – prices still remain high. Looking for trends in the data we don’t really see anything new here. Midyears and C7 ZR1’s are still red hot. How hot? The Top 11 consists of 9 midyears and 2 C7 ZR1’s. Each of the ZR1’s sold for over $300,000 including fees. In total for the auction, 9 C7 ZR1’s sold at an average price of $229,167.

In the C2 realm, it’s 1963’s and 1967’s still carrying the torch with 3 and 4, respectively, occupying our Top 11 list. Auction-wide, a total of 10 1963 Split window coupes traded hands at an average transaction price of $244,750. 1967’s were strong as well. Of the 35 offered, 27 of them sold averaging $169,624 each.

We’re also starting to see some strength in the mid-to-late C3 market based on a pair 1978 pace cars that sold for over $100k each and a 1975 L82 convertible that brought $57,200.

Overall, the total cost of our Top 11 sums up to $3,830,250 and the average cost computes out to $348,204. The top Corvette sale was an award winning black 1967 coupe that commanded $495,000. Second place went to the first 1963 Sting Ray sold to the public which sold for $467,000; significantly lower than its $600,000 – $800,000 preauction estimate. A Lynndale Blue 435hp 1967 convertible occupied the 3rd place position after finding a new home at $440,000. In 2022, we saw stock restored or original cars selling for more than restomods and that trends holds for 2023 as well with just one custom Corvette – a 1967 restomod – in the Top 11. When all was said and done, 104 Corvettes (24% of the Corvette docket) sold for over $100,000.

Significant no-sales included a custom 1963 coupe at $390k, a stock 1963 split window coupe at $260k, plus a COPO L88 racer that only managed a $175,000 bid.

In our Well Sold (or WTF?) category, check out the 2017 Heritage Edition GS w/600 miles that sold for a staggering $104,500. A quick look at Cars.com shows a hand full of low mile (7-10k) 2017 Heritage GS cars all with asking prices around $70k. We’re struggling to see how 3-digit miles can add $30k to the value of a 6-year old Corvette.

Finally, our El Cheapo award for the most cost efficient Corvette of the auction goes to a 1993 40th Anniversary Convertible which sold at no reserve for just $5,500.

After a wild week and a half in Florida, it appears that the collector car market is as strong as ever. Overall, it looks like values in most corners of the hobby continue to rise at varying rates. The price of admission to the Corvette hobby is going up!

Mecum Kissimmee is always a great look into how the annual January auction frenzy could go each year. With several more sales yet this month, including the annual Barrett-Jackson spectacle, we’ll see if numbers remain high.
