Back in the 1960s, motorheads certainly faced a plethora of optional engines when it came to Corvettes.

This 1968 Stingray T-top Coupe left the St. Louis factory with one of the rarest – the L71 427 with the optional L89 aluminum heads. No doubt because they were a costly $832.05 option, only 390 of the 427 engines featured the aluminum heads that sliced weight while making the engine breathe better.

That lethal combination enabled the Corvette to turn a 13.3-second time in the quarter-mile, still competitive in some circles some 55 years later.

This example – which features a repaint in black over the original Corvette Bronze – is being offered for sale in the Phoenix, Arizona area on Craigslist with an asking price of $75,000.

The seller has the tank sheet and partial build sheet that confirms the L89 option, along with the F41 suspension, alarm system, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, and power windows.

Built in mid-July 1968, the car includes the later ’68 updates, he says, and “has all the ’68 only parts and everything is dated, even the original spare tire.”

The chassis has already been restored and is described as being in “excellent” condition with “no rust at all,” and the L71 engine has been broken in after a rebuild, with more than $15,000 in receipts giving the details. The term “numbers matching” isn’t used in the ad, but the seller does proclaim that the car is “the real deal.” We’re assuming that means the original engine and four-speed manual transmission are still in place, but a buyer would be wise to confirm that.

Inside, the carpet, door panels, and seat covers (in Tobacco) have already been replaced, and the rest of the interior is described as “original.”

Outside, as mentioned, the car has rechromed bumpers and has been repainted, with no evidence of accidents over the past 55 years, though the paint is described as a “10-footer” by the seller, who suggests a new owner could drive it as is or add a new paint job and have the car judged.

“Everything is there,” he concludes. “These cars don’t come up for sale often.”

How would you proceed with this rare Stingray? If money was no object, I might lean toward going with orange outside to complement the Tobacco interior.

  1. It was originally Bronze with the Tobacco interior. Seems that you need to keep it those colors or just change both. I was offered a 1967 in the 1980’s and passed as I assumed it was too expensive (belonged the the owner of a Chevy dealer) and I didn’t like the color…green and tan. Seems a whole lot more 1968 L89’s were made than in 1967.

  2. If money was no object, I would repaint it HOK Candy Tangerine Metallic and change the interior to Black. I would add side racing mirrors and get rid of the luggage rack. I would also add wider tires with wider and larger diameter custom 5 spoke wheels and install side pipes. It would look badass!

  3. “IF” it’s numbers matching this is a hell of a deal. Paint it the original Corvette Bronze, leave the interior alone and lose the luggage rack. I’d be all over this one if I wasn’t so poor. Zoom Zoom

  4. If memory serves, at 71, not so much, the mags of the day loved this L71. The enormous heads going from cast iron to aluminum actually reduced the 427 weight to a bit less than the all cast iron 327! Although Chevy didn’t rate the horsepower differently that was also a plus.
