Corvettes for Sale: Black 1979 Corvette with L82

Get ready for spring with this 1979 Corvette coupe that has one day left at the 427stingray auction site.

The Corvette was at the peak of its popularity, at least sales-wise, when this black over red leather beauty first hit the streets. Chevy sold a record 53.807 coupes in ’79 as America was crazy during that era about ‘Vettes, Trans Ams, Z/28s, and Cutlasses, to name a few of the most popular models. Corvette no doubt benefited from all the hoopla over the ’78 Indy Pace Car a year earlier that generated tons of free publicity for the car.

The current bid for this car sits at a below-reserve $7,000, so it remains up in the air if this classic C3 will find a new home by tomorrow afternoon.

That would be a shame because this Corvette includes the more powerful and desirable L82 350 V8 engine that pumped out 225 horsepower, 30 more than the base L48. Like 41,453 other ’79s, this one is connected to a three-speed automatic transmission.

The red leather interior offers a striking complement to the black exterior and remains in great condition. We’ve always favored these style seats, and while there is some sign of wear on the driver’s seat, overall the cockpit looks nice in the listing photos.

The black paint still has a nice shine, but if you’re a perfectionist, you might not be satisfied because that color is so hard to keep clean for very long and shows every little nick and scratch. Still, when a black car like this is polished up, it’s hard to beat, don’t you think.

The seller has already serviced the car extensively, including the brakes, carburetor, new U-joints, new battery, new starter, front-end alignment, tail lights, and A/C, so it’s ready for a new owner to take the glass T-tops out and enjoy a cruise through the country to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

  1. I had one new in ’79, same colors as this one with the same spoilers and L-82, stickered for $13,962. I always get excited when I see one thinking it could be mine, as it was my first Corvette and my first new car. Sold it for more cash down on my first house when interest rates were 16% in 1981. I bought it with my GM employee discount for $10,500. Took it out on a new expressway, early on the day it was to open. She would do 138 mph with headlights up and 140 mph with them down.
