[VIDEO] Episode III: C8 Corvette ZR1X Races a Tesla Plaid in Arizona

The Drag Times ZR1X content dump continues from the Sonoran Desert today, with Brooks and Co. continuing to take on all challengers while they have access to Chevrolet’s American hybrid hypercar.

After teaching a $4MM Bugatti what real speed looks like in the morning then falling to a Lucid Air Sapphire in consecutive runs as the temps continued to rise throughout the day, the 1,250 HP Corvette had an afternoon date with another monstrously quick EV on the books.

This time it was called out by the OG; a Tesla Model S Plaid created by many of the same engineers who would go on to author the Lucid. If you’re thinking “didn’t we already see the ZR1X embarrass a Plaid,” then you’ve been paying attention. The first Plaid/X showdown was such a decisive win for Detroit that people wondered if the Tesla was even charged.

Well, this time, it has reinforcements in the form of the weather and a host of modifications that’ll make it a harder out than Tony Gwynn. On top of the brutal, engine-soaking heat taking its toll on the ZR1X as we already witnessed in the Lucid matchup, the Tesla owner claims his example makes 200 HP over stock and has been dieting to the tune of a 160 lb. weight reduction. The now 1,220-horse, 4,600-pound EV is also riding on lightweight wheels with drag slicks and ceramic brakes, which are all a part of a ‘spicy’ package that he engineered himself and sells to the public (info in video description) to fund the next ride he desires: a ZR1X.

Like the Bugatti and Lucid clips, this showdown is comprised by three standing drag races down Apex Motor Club’s 3,500-foot back straight followed by a roll race, which is where the Tesla owner claims his mods really wake up the original killer-app EV. Enjoy the video below and keep your eyes here for the next installment that should finally put a hybrid Ferrari in the X’s crosshairs!

  1. Brooks excels at spending 5+ minutes on pure chaff before getting to the meat and potatoes of why people are watching. In this case, 6:30. Sadly, this seems to be the case for 90% of the corvette tubers; lots of filler.
