Last year we followed along as a previously-stolen 2015 Corvette Stingray was recovered by New York State’s Department of Motor Vehicles and then sold through the New York state government’s surplus auction. Actually, it took three government surplus auctions to sell the car as the winning bidders in the first two auctions backed out.

This morning we learned of another Corvette with a questionable VIN being offered by the State of New York tomorrow and this time it’s a classic 1966 Corvette Convertible.

The Ermine White Sting Ray is the final vehicle listed in tomorrow’s Central Islip Surplus Auction. The Corvette is Lot #116 and the live auction requires you to be on-site to bid. The auction location is 375 Carelton Avenue Central Islip, NY 11722.

The 1966 Corvette has been issued a New York VIN which probably means this Sting Ray was either stolen or was caught wearing a fraudulent VIN belonging to another vehicle.

TITLE

As for the Corvette, the condition is hard to tell. The Sting Ray sits on wheel dollies and as no photos are shown of the engine, we are assuming that this is a non-running vehicle. We tried to glimpse the redline on the tachometer to give us an idea of what engine might be powering the car but it’s unfortunately hidden by the steering wheel. Based on the small-block hood it’s most likely the 327, again assuming that the original engine is still installed.

We get our best look at the interior from the driver’s side and we note a 4-speed manual transmission, power windows, and rare headrests for the model year. The Corvette also is wearing the aluminum-finned knock-off wheels wrapped in Blackwall tires and side exhaust is also present on the car, but it’s missing its covers. Also missing is the radio antenna, but the car did gain a passenger-side mirror so there’s a bit of customization happening here.

With the replacement VIN, the Sting Ray may have lost its luster as a collector vehicle but that just means the car is now a driver and should be treated like one! And depending on the originality of the powertrain, it could become a candidate to restomod. What would you do with this New York VIN-Stamped Sting Ray?

The Central Islip Surplus Auction kicks off tomorrow at 9:30am. A 13% buyer’s premium will be charged. Full payment must be made 30 minutes of the auction’s completion.

  1. Nice weekend cruiser 👍 if it’s running, or just needs a little work to get it running. No mention about how long it’s been sitting either. 🤔💭

  2. Think it has red line tires, just dirty so hard to tell.
    No backup lights?
Passenger side pipe cover is there.

  3. Not a bad looking car. If you are a corvette owner with a trailer queen this looks like a good car to drive and enjoy.
