[VIDEO] Comprehensive Exhaust Note Comparison of the C8 Z06 versus the Ferrari 458

As we wait and wait and wait for the 2023 Corvette Z06, here’s a fun video that does a comprehensive exhaust note comparison between the Ferrari 458 and the new American supercar.

And when I say comprehensive, it’s because we are hearing the two cars from a variety of locations – both inside and out of the car – as well as hearing the two sports cars at idle, during a flyby, and at wide-open throttle while riding inside.

Both sports cars are flat-plane crank V8s and it’s no wonder that Chevy engineers have used the 458 as one of the cars to benchmark against the Z06 as it boasts a 9,000 RPM redline compared to the Z06’s 8,600 RPM. However, the exhaust setups on the two cars are different (three different cars if you count a corner-exhaust Z06 and the center-mounted exhaust Z06). To my ears, the Z06 does have a bit more of a lower sound than the Ferrari and is not quite as shrill as the Italian when performing heavy engine revs.

Like I have to ask, but which was your favorite sounding flat-plane crank V8 engine? The Z06 or the 458? Leave us your comments below!

  1. To me, no contest…Z06 sounds better. Add in the price factor of the Z listing at probably a third of the 458’s. Hey, you can even tote your golf clubs in the Z.

    Z06 all the way!

  2. The 2017 Shelby GT350 with a flat plane engine I had before I got my C8 had a much better sound than either the Z06 and the Ferrari. Very different. A much lower pitch. Maybe someone will do a comparison between it and the Z06 and Ferraro.

  3. When going to Watkins Glen in the late 60’s and early 70’s, you could easily distinguish the sounds of the Ferrari V12’s, flat 12’s, Porsche flat 6’s, 8’s, 12’s, Matra V12’s and the ground
pounding big block Chevy’s, especially during the Can-Am races. You knew what cars were coming by the sound, even before they came into view. Wicked sounds from very wicked cars!!!!

  4. The main reason the Z06 has a better sounding exhaust note is the additional liter of engine volume & the way Chevy engineers designed the intake plenum & additional 3 auxiliary centered butterfly’s.

  5. I think I preferred the Z06 in almost all instances except idle. There was something shaky/burbly (and not the good burble) at idle…almost sounded like there was water in the exhaust…There is a harmonic tone in the 458 on revs that is really nice…But overall, I like the Z06. The Z06 gets to revs quicker than the 458, which surprised me. I think you have a little more cabin sound of the engine in the Z06…which I think you would want for this model…It could go either way for the base model…

I still prefer the lower grumble and beefy grunt of the pushrod…just something menacing about it. And love the low end torque…Audibly, appreciate all of them…458 might sound a touch more exotic, but the Z06 sounds cleaner and meaner with how quickly it gets to revs..My favorite are the LS engines (even more then the LT’s) They have the good burble and you can feel it as much as hear it at startup and at idle.

  6. Pete314’s comments are spot on.

Which is why I got a 97 ls1 corvette engine going into a porsche 944 while I also get a Z06. Best of both worlds in their own right.

Very much agree that the extra litre and other design highlights are what’s helping a muscley undertone to the high exotic revving. I can live with the watery burble idle as it still sounds anxiously angry and ready to pounce!
