Dr Fauci, today, announced a new side effect of the Omicron variant. Citing recent data from Kissimmee, Florida he noted that the new variant could induce excessive spending on collector cars. Ok, maybe that’s not really the case, but the money at Mecum’s Kissimmee mega auction was flowing faster than Omicron germs through your new N95 mask.

If you listened to this week’s Corvette Today Podcast, we already touched on the big bucks spent in Kissimmee last week. In fact, the 2022 sale set a world record with $217 million in total sales. That’s up over 30% from the previous record of $176 million dollars. The data is staggering. For example, the 90% sell-through rate is the highest ever at Kissimmee and all 11 days set single-day sales records. Saturday, January 11th alone saw $72 million dollars in sales and a total of 13 cars traded hands at $1 million or more. All those numbers are in addition to the $2.6 million dollars of road art they sold along the way.

Thanks to inflation and the lofty numbers in Florida, we elected to increase our normal Top 11 Corvette sales list to 15 cars. The Kissimmee docket featured just over 400 Corvettes for sale. Total Corvette sales were over $27 million and the sell-through rate appears to be in line with the 90% Mecum reported for the full auction.

Sifting through the Corvette results we see numbers up on seemingly all genres of cars. We also noted a dearth of restomods in the top spots this time around with just 4 of them in the top 15. The remaining top sales were either racers, factory-correct restored, or Survivor cars. 1963 coupes could be the new hot spot in the market based on prices here. We find 6 of them in the top 15 and they all sold north of $300k. Also, consider the red ’63 fuelie coupe that sold on Bring a Trailer last week for $341K. The total price of the Top 15 Corvette sales in Kissimmee was $5.2 million which averages out to roughly $375,000 per car.

The top selling Corvette was the red 1963 Z06 at $605,000 including fees. Second place went to a big tank Z06 at $506,000. The 1957 airbox fuelie claimed the bronze medal commanding $440,000. Another notable sale was a 2022 Stingray C8.R Edition Coupe that sold for $165,000. The most cost effective Corvette in Kissimmee was a Bronze 1984 coupe that sold for a reasonable $8,250.

Several of the “Star” Corvettes failed to meet reserve and returned home with their current owners. Among them were Gulf One which no-saled at $2.4 million, the 1966 NART Pilot L88 at $1.1 million, and the right hand drive 1963 Z06 at $300,000. The Corvette Super Sport was pulled from the auction at the last moment and is no longer shown on the Mecum website. We reached out to Mecum for comment but no one seems to know why it never crossed the block.

We also saw many “Very Well Sold” cars (some may call them WTF prices). This batch includes a 2017 Grand Sport with 7 miles that sold for $187k, a 2019 ZR1 with 11 miles @ $297K, and a 5,000-mile 1984 that sold for $51,000. Sign up for a free account and then take some time to go through the Kissimmee results and you’ll find many cars that sold for much more than we would have expected.

So, are these huge numbers the new normal or have we just seen a glitch in the matrix? Just when you thought the pre-owned car bubble couldn’t take any more air, Mecum goes and stuffs it fuller yet. The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction is this week. That’s always been fantasyland money out there. It will be interesting to see if their prices are “normal” or if they jump above what we’re used to seeing just like Mecum Kissimmee did.
