The Stanley Cup Visits Jordan Martinook’s Hometown in a Roswell Green Corvette ZR1

One of the best traditions in sports dictates that each member of the newly crowned National Hockey League champion team receives 24 hours with the Stanley Cup. They can spend their day with the greatest trophy in sports doing whatever their hearts desire.

It isn’t uncommon for players to throw parties with Lord Stanley’s Cup as the guest of honor, host parades in their hometowns, or simply spend a secluded day with the cup (and its chaperone), reflecting on their triumph while eating ice cream or drinking champaign out of its upper bowl. Most often though, Stanley Cup champions like to give back to those who helped them get where are, letting their family, friends, and community bask in the glow of the accomplishment along with them.

The last option is exactly what Carolina Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook chose to do with his brief time in possession of the definitive 35.25-inch, 34.5-pound prize. After contributing five points to the ‘Canes impressive postseason run, and crashing teammate Seth Jarvis’ day with the trophy in Winnipeg, Canada on Monday, the 12-year pro and first time champion headed Northwest to Leduc, Alberta, a suburb of Edmonton – a city that’s been starved of Cups since winning 5 in 7 years between 1984 and 1990 – where around 3,000 locals gathered to greet him and celebrate in the rec center he frequented as a youth.

“I worked out in this gym. I ran around this track. This is pretty cool,” Jordan told reporters on Tuesday, continuing with, “This is the most incredible trophy, and I wanted to share it with my hometown. This is where I grew up and it’s important to share it with people.”

As ‘cool and incredible’ as the trophy and event were, the highlight of the day was almost certainly Martinook’s arrival in the passenger seat of a Roswell Green C8 Corvette ZR1 convertible with the Cup proudly raised through the open top. According to NHL.com’s Anna Kulesa, JM swung by Edmonton’s Lakewood Chevrolet to pick up the 1,064 horsepower American supercar prior to the event, stopping to sign autographs and give unsuspecting dealership employees a chance to see his silver date for the day.

Even though he doesn’t represent any of CorvetteBlogger’s preferred teams – we have hubs in proud hockey locals like Colorado, Detroit, and Tampa – we absolutely love seeing the world’s toughest professional athletes choose Chevy’s hypercar of the people. After Sergei Federov’s jersey retirement earlier this year, there’s obviously something inherent in championship hockey players that makes them ‘get’ the automotive world’s ultimate alphanumeric: ZR1.
