Chevrolet is apparently notifying dealers of customers whose Corvettes were damaged due to the tornado that struck the Corvette Assembly Plant in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 11th.

The Corvette Action Center is reporting that approximately 115 Corvettes INSIDE the assembly plant “were damaged beyond repair and are being scrapped. Dealers with customer orders for their cars will have to resubmit the orders into GM’s Order Workbench System.”

That is a lot more cars than expected, but when you consider the damage that water can do to exposed interiors along with the electronics and wiring, it looks like GM isn’t playing around and is scrapping any car that may show the potential for damage due to the tornado strike.

This seems to gel with what some affected customers are saying. Tom Ringelstetter wrote on Facebook’s C8 Corvette Owners page that he was one of the owners with a damaged car.

“Just got a call from my dealer. Not good news. Our car was on the line at the time of the storm ( probably coming off later in day on Monday 12/13). Cars on the line are being scrapped due to damage and/or potential damage. Getting a new order number. Not sure at this time where we’re going to land in the process. TBD. Oh well, wait continues. Disappointing, however considering all the heart break there, waiting is nothing like what’s happening in those areas. We were close.”

Another affected customer goes by the name of “Predator 007” on the Corvette Forum and he says pretty much the same:

“Heads up everybody. My VIN was 10109 and scheduled to be built this past Monday the 13th according to the spreadsheet here. I just got a call from my dealer that my car was actually built last Thur/Friday. Unfortunately, it was damaged and has to be rebuilt. He said all of the damaged cars are going to go back to the front of the line. If you had a Vin # somewhere around mine, there is a chance your car was built and is fine hopefully.”

Predator 007 also says his rep asked him if we wanted to make any changes from the old order, so at least he can reconfirm that he is getting the exact Corvette he wants now.

As for these customers, we are getting the idea that Chevrolet will take these new resubmitted orders and then work them back into the production schedule sooner rather than later, so hopefully the wait for these affected customers will not be too severe.

The Corvette Action Center also states that completed Corvettes “stored outside the plant awaiting shipping are still being assessed for damage. Those vehicles are currently on hold and will not ship to their respective dealers until a full damage assessment is completed.”

We’ve spoken to three high volume Corvette dealers today who have all received shipments from the assembly plant after the tornado strike, so completed Corvettes are shipping.

We have reached out to a Chevrolet representative regarding the damaged Corvettes at the Corvette Assembly Plant for the purposes of confirmation, and we’ll let you know anything that is relayed back to us.

  1. Telling them to shove it would appear to be a bit extreme. It’s not like the factory can control the weather. While I don’t have an order for a C8, I think I would be satisfied that the factory isn’t trying to throw a band-aid on car that is damaged or potentially damaged and not deliver it in a condition that you would expect. One never knows what water will do to exposed electronics and other areas that are not supposed to be exposed. Would you rather the factory fix the cars to the best of their ability and deliver on time only to have gremlins surface and create customer dissatisfaction through lemon laws etc or take no chances and get it right? Seems the factory is doing the right thing here.

  2. yeah but if you have been waiting for AGES this is a real kick in the butt.

PORSCHE GT3 is looking better as we speak.

  3. Honestly, people were killed in those tornadoes, homes were destroyed and businesses demolished and some of you are bitching that you won’t be getting your Corvette on time. REALLY. Where is the compassion for those people that have to endure the pain of losing everything they owned while all of you worry about when your getting your new car. Show some compassion and respect for those hurting because of this disaster.

  4. It’s amazing to the shallowness of humans when adversity of others are displayed before them. It would be nice to see one of the well off customers donate or in someway help the families of those affected. Such as the family who s 2 month old baby passed from injuries caused by these tornadoes that life alone is more valuable than all the corvettes that are gonna be scrapped because of these deadly storms. May our future hold more peace and compassion for our world between all countries and race of humans . This is selfishness beyond comparison. Prayers for all affected by these storms from the families who lost loved one to those who lost a most precious Corvette. God bless.

  5. Cody I am sorry that you misinterpreted my comment. I have donated multiple times to the “recovery effort” of this tragedy. I already own a 1979 Corvette and have no intentions of getting my hands on a Corvette from this disaster.
