One of our spy photographers recently captured what they think is the Corvette E-Ray driving around Metro Detroit without a single ounce of camo, but we aren’t so sure that’s actually the case…

The uncamouflaged prototype is wearing an identical widebody design to the upcoming 2020 Corvette Z06 with the Z07’s aggressive aero, and it is even rocking a set of carbon fiber wheels. But the exception on this car is the exhaust set-up which shows the same corner set-up as the Stingray.

However, we recently learned after the Z06 reveal that Chevrolet still has active Z06 prototypes with the corner-mounted exhaust. Apparently, the center-mounted versions with the innovative trumpet tips came towards the end of the Z06’s development cycle. That might also reflect our photographer’s opinion that the engine sounded very different than the raspy and high-revving Z06, when instead it was the older exhaust setup that changed the sound.

I’ve been wrong on colors before and while at first glance I thought this was a Black C8, I’m actually thinking it’s Shadow Gray, which was canceled at the end of the 2021 model year. I’ve adjusted the color levels in photoshop as best I could to reveal the color. Also, check out this car as the wishbone is in body color which would be the first time we’ve seen an uncamouflaged Z06 with the design. This prototype had camo on it that has since been removed, as you can see remnants of it on the front fascia and rear vents.

Another reason why we think this is the Z06 prototype is the carbon fiber wheels. You can only order them with the Z07 package as the steering inputs have been updated to account for the lighter wheels. Most likely the widebody E-Ray will be receiving its own unique line-up of wheels just as Chevy has done in previous generations.

Here is the set of photos captured by Spiedbilde so let us know in the comments below if you think this is the E-Ray or if you agree with us that it’s an older Z06 prototype.

  1. Does the Z06 have that huge intake in front of the rear wheels? I’m okay with the normal (non-Z06) intake but that one is just too big.

  2. Hopefully the electric car has the stingray body. The car with the bigger fender flares and intake is starting to look Merican. Now if there is LOUD mode for the exhaust. I can barely hear my C8 from within the cabin.

  3. If this car was a E Ray, it would have front axles clearly visible thru the non center cap wheels. You can see the rear axles. The E Ray from my understanding has a electric motor powering each front wheel, thus the car would be a all wheel drive.

  4. Older pre production Z06. The wing has been removed but the mounts for it remain. Maybe an experimental hybrid Corvette. That might explain the exhaust.

  5. The older pre production Z06 cars were corner exhaust. This car also has the carbon ceramic brakes, part of the Z07 package and the carbon fiber wheels which is exclusive to the Z07 package. Gotta have front axles if it were a Hybrid test mule.
